kill your heroes: a defence

a justification for this newsletter spin-off

recent developments in the options available to substack writers (no, not that one. or that one) allow for the creation of spin-offs from main newsletter and podcast publications. so i thought i’d exercise the option to create an extension of the the pop culture essays i have released up to this point.

those posts included both takes on present trends, events, phenomena, and more happening in popular culture (mainly music), plus reflections on an increasing number of things i lived through in britain – some of which i still just about remember the first time around – where i thought it worth testing my memory (and taste) on whether those things were as good as they seemed at the time*.

you could reasonably accuse me of trying to make sense of and ultimately renouncing my many teenage cultural faux pas. that would be fair. hence the title ‘kill your heroes’, a more fitting description of the essays i had hitherto released than my main newsletter moniker, under which i will dedicate solely to my creative output from here on in**.

thanks for sticking with it. expect a new post in your inbox soon! xoxo

* now’s a good time to promise to all readers that all arguments about persons and their work will be made in good faith, no matter the tone.

** another justification. *style guide klaxon* kill your heroes posts will be written in lowercase (with the exception of brand / artist names and release titles). why? because it’s faster and easier to type, i can forget all of the pointless rules about what, where, and when to capitalise, and linguistically speaking, writing in sentence case is a fascistic construct something something blah blah blah… i dunno, i threw that last line in to annoy pedants. none of it really matters. nothing does. stay blessed.
