Crypto Longs Lose $404M as Bitcoin Dips Below $80K | ethereum.miami

Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 over the weekend for the first time in more than a month, dragging ETH down 1.88% to $2,322.80. Crypto long positions shed $404 million in four hours. The trigger: U.S. evacuations from parts of the Middle East rattled risk assets across the board.

Spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $773 million in net outflows on Thursday and Friday, reversing three straight days of inflows. Ethereum's market cap sits at $283.8 billion with $9 billion in 24-hour volume. The weekend selloff landed squarely on leveraged traders who had positioned for continued upside.

HSBC Puts a Stablecoin in 3 Million Wallets

HSBC activated a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin inside PayMe, its consumer payments app, on Friday. The move puts a bank-issued token into roughly 3 million wallets overnight, making it one of the largest single-day stablecoin distributions by user count. The test: whether a regulated, fiat-backed token issued by a major bank can function as everyday money rather than a trading instrument.

The launch sharpens the competition among stablecoin issuers. Tether and Circle dominate dollar-denominated stablecoins, but HSBC is betting that local-currency tokens issued by trusted banks carry a different kind of credibility with retail users. Hong Kong's regulatory framework for stablecoins, finalized earlier this year, gave HSBC the legal runway to move.

Tokenized Stocks Hit Corporate Resistance

Twenty-two major companies have now objected to having their shares listed as tokenized securities on OKXICE, the first trading venue operating under the SEC's innovation exemption. Wells Fargo, Cisco, and Marvell joined the list this week, following earlier pushback from McDonald's, Microsoft, and Google.

The objections don't necessarily signal a rejection of tokenization as a concept. OKXICE listed these companies without their consent, relying on the SEC exemption to create tokenized versions of publicly traded stocks. Corporate legal teams, unsurprisingly, prefer to control where and how their securities trade. The early friction says more about issuer caution and liability concerns than about the viability of on-chain equities.

Securitize and other tokenization platforms working directly with issuers on bespoke RWA products may find this dynamic works in their favor. Consent-based tokenization, where the company opts in, looks increasingly like the only path that scales without legal conflict.

Franklin Templeton Quadruples XRP Ledger Position

Franklin Templeton added $150 million in fund shares to the XRP Ledger through two subscriptions on Thursday, nearly quadrupling its token count on the network. The entire amount landed in a single wallet that shares authorized signers with the issuing entity. The asset manager has been steadily expanding its on-chain fund distribution across multiple networks, treating blockchains as settlement and record-keeping infrastructure rather than speculative venues.

U.S. Regulatory Vacuum Pushes Business Abroad

The failure of the U.S. Clarity Act is creating a competitive opening for Asia and the Middle East, according to Apex Group CEO Peter Hughes. His warning echoes a growing consensus among institutional players: jurisdictions with clear digital asset frameworks are absorbing the talent, capital, and companies that Washington's inaction leaves on the table.

Hong Kong's stablecoin framework, Dubai's VARA licensing regime, and Singapore's ongoing MAS clarity have all accelerated since the U.S. stalled. For Ethereum-native infrastructure providers like Alchemy and Fireblocks, the shift means building for a more geographically distributed client base.

Bitcoin Holders Mature Into Borrowers

Long-term bitcoin holders are increasingly borrowing against their positions and seeking yield rather than simply holding, Xapo Bank CEO Seamus Rocca told CoinDesk. The behavior mirrors what happened with traditional wealth management decades ago: once an asset class gains enough credibility, holders start treating it as collateral rather than a speculative bet.

Strategy and Strive, meanwhile, face a balancing act between aggressive bitcoin accumulation and the preferred stock dividends funding those purchases. The two firms have collectively financed the acquisition of nearly 136,000 BTC through preferred securities. Analysts expect this funding channel to complement ETF-driven demand rather than replace it.

Miami Scene: Tokenization's Next Fight Starts Here

The corporate resistance to OKXICE's tokenized stock listings carries particular weight in Miami, where much of the U.S. tokenization industry has concentrated. Securitize, headquartered in the city, has built its model around issuer consent, working directly with asset managers like BlackRock to tokenize fund shares with full legal buy-in. The OKXICE blowback validates that approach.

Miami-based Homebase, which focuses on real estate tokenization, operates in a segment where consent is built into the structure by default. Property owners opt in. The contrast with OKXICE's approach, where public company shares were tokenized without corporate authorization, highlights why Miami's tokenization builders have largely avoided the legal tripwires now tripping up others.

The regulatory vacuum that Apex Group's Hughes flagged also matters locally. Miami positioned itself as the U.S. crypto capital under former Mayor Francis Suarez, but the city's advantage depends on federal clarity that hasn't materialized. Without it, the international firms that Miami attracted may start routing more activity through Dubai or Singapore instead. The pipeline of conferences and builder residencies planned for Q1 2027 suggests confidence hasn't evaporated, but the window isn't open forever.

In Brief

An Argentine judge dismissed fraud charges against President Javier Milei over his promotion of the LIBRA memecoin. The 60-page ruling concluded that his social media post, while influential, did not constitute 'criminally relevant deception.' The token crashed after its brief surge, but the court found no evidence Milei personally profited.

Google quietly updated its privacy policy, effective October 16, to allow Gmail, Drive, and Photos data to personalize ads through its Personal Intelligence AI features. The change carves out an exception to a long-standing pledge that those services wouldn't feed the ad machine. Sweden, separately, blocked ChatGPT and Claude from government computers, directing civil servants to Microsoft Copilot as the only AI tool that passed its security review.
