Bitcoin Decouples From Equities as Iran Shock Sends Oil Past $100 | ethereum.miami

Bitcoin climbed to $79,700 on Tuesday as Iranian military strikes sent Brent crude past $100 for the first time since July and European equities sold off. The move confirmed a pattern that has been building for months: BTC is tracking gold, not stocks. ETH held steady at $2,486.93, up a modest 0.22% over 24 hours on $12.1 billion in volume, with a market cap of $303.5 billion.

Macro Shock, Crypto Shrug

The geopolitical backdrop is dramatic. Oil at triple digits, the Japanese yen strengthening past 153 per dollar, European indices falling. In prior cycles, this kind of risk-off event would have cratered crypto alongside equities. Instead, BTC dipped to $77,600 before recovering almost entirely, finishing the day essentially flat. The aggregate Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) has now been in profit territory for four consecutive weeks, the longest such streak of 2026. One widely followed analyst cautioned that downside risk persists despite the onchain signal.

Zcash provided the day's standout performance, gaining roughly 43% on the week after Grayscale's new ZEC fund crossed $500 million in inflows.

Iran Opens a Crypto Backdoor

Iran quietly eased currency controls to let exporters use overseas earnings to fund imports directly, bypassing the official foreign-exchange system, the Financial Times reported. The practical effect: crypto becomes a sanctions-circumvention tool with tacit government approval. Exporters no longer need to sell foreign currency at official rates, removing a key friction point that previously limited digital asset utility in Iranian trade finance.

The timing, amid a military escalation that has drawn international attention, makes the regulatory shift more conspicuous than Tehran likely intended.

Block Wants to Be a Bank

Jack Dorsey's Block filed for a U.S. trust bank charter. The proposed entity, Builders Bank, would offer federally supervised digital asset custody, consolidating work Block currently manages under more than 50 state money transmitter licenses. Builders Bank would not accept deposits or issue loans. The charter application signals that at least some crypto-adjacent firms view a single federal framework as preferable to the patchwork of state-by-state compliance, even after years of skepticism about banking regulators.

Silvergate's Former CEO Points the Finger

Alan Lane, the former CEO of Silvergate, publicly blamed what he called a "coordinated attack" by the Biden administration for the bank's 2023 wind-down. Lane said political pressure made continued operation untenable. The claim resurfaces familiar arguments about Operation Chokepoint 2.0, the informal name given to alleged government efforts to cut crypto firms off from banking services. Whether the next administration's posture produces a materially different regulatory environment for crypto-banking relationships is the question that matters now.

Regulatory Signals Across Three Continents

India's Financial Intelligence Unit issued non-compliance notices to 15 crypto platforms for anti-money-laundering failures. The FIU-IND did not name the platforms, but the action signals tightening enforcement in one of the world's largest retail crypto markets.

In Singapore, Gemini secured a payment license authorizing digital payment token and cross-border money transfer services without standard transaction-volume limits. The license positions Gemini for growth in Southeast Asia's most crypto-friendly regulatory jurisdiction.

In Mexico, authorities seized 300 crypto mining rigs wired directly into a hydroelectric dam. Forensic accountants are tracing ownership, and money laundering has not been ruled out.

Staked TRX ETF Arrives, Hunter Biden Launches a Memecoin

The first staked ETF tied to Tron hits U.S. markets on Wednesday, offering investors TRX exposure with built-in staking yield. The product expands the universe of crypto ETFs beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, though TRX's governance and decentralization profile will draw scrutiny.

Separately, Hunter Biden defended his LAPTOP memecoin ahead of its Wednesday launch, calling the TRUMP token a "grift" in the process. Roughly 30% of the LAPTOP supply is tied to 30 public real-world events that either burn or donate the tokens depending on outcomes. Biden said the project would airdrop coins to nearly one million wallets that lost money on TRUMP. The political memecoin meta continues to defy serious analysis.

$245M Crypto Fraud Ringleader Pleads Guilty in Miami

Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean national and Miami resident, pleaded guilty to leading a $245 million crypto theft conspiracy. Prosecutors said Lam organized an international network that targeted cryptocurrency holders through social engineering and home invasions, stealing approximately 4,100 bitcoin. The case, prosecuted through the Southern District of Florida, is one of the largest individual crypto fraud actions tied to Miami's federal courts.

The case underscores a persistent tension in Miami's crypto identity. The city has positioned itself as a hub for legitimate Web3 development, attracting builders, capital, and conferences. But the same qualities that draw founders (favorable tax treatment, international connectivity, a young and mobile population) also attract bad actors. Lam's operation reportedly included both sophisticated online scams and physical break-ins, blending cybercrime with traditional robbery in a way that local law enforcement has flagged as an emerging pattern in South Florida.

Miami-Dade's crypto community has grown substantially since the city's initial push to court the industry in 2021. The tension between that growth and cases like Lam's will shape how regulators, both local and federal, approach the city's crypto sector in the months ahead.
