Essential Effects: from early access to general release

Hello!

Since publishing the early access version of "Essential Effects" two weeks ago, I've gotten a lot of feedback, kind words, and some folks even bought a copy! Thank you!

Some of the nice things folks have said:

I can confirm that Essential Effects is really good. A great practical guide to Cats Effect.

-- Dave Gurnell, author of "Creative Scala", "Essential Scala" and "Scala with Cats"

Can confirm this book is legit. I'd easily recommend it to anybody getting into Scala or wanting to learn pure functional programming with Cats Effect.

-- Ryan Peters, Senior Scala Engineer @47deg

I've been working through a reviewer copy and it's great. Full of stuff I wish I had in one place when I was learning this. Plenty of things I missed and have now learned.

-- Mat Fournier, Ex-professional rock engineer turned dev

You can purchase the early-access version anytime; you'll automatically receive the final version once it is published.

For the past two weeks I've been teaching courses, but now I'm back working through the list of issues to get the final version out, including EPUB and MOBI formats. I'm also polishing the last chapter, a case study to build a job scheduler using Cats Effect.

In other news:

  • I gave an introductory talk about Cats Effect for for SF Scala group, and you can watch a recording on YouTube.
  • Later this week I'm recording a podcast episode with Zach McCoy for The Scala Logs. I don't listen to podcasts, but I listen to this one. (Is that a contradiction? Very well, I'm contradictory). I'm sure we'll talk about the book, along with other nerdy things.

Some upcoming events related to "Essential Effects":

  • On 3 Feb 2021, I'll be giving an introductory talk to the Singapore Scala Programmers group (UTC+8 timezone, whereas I live in UTC-7, where it will be Feb 2nd). You can sign up to attend.
  • On 24 Feb 2021, I'll be speaking at the Philly Area Scala Enthusiasts about Cats Effect. You can learn more and sign up.
  • Our next Essential Effects course (EU-timezone) runs from 24-26 Feb 2021. Tickets are still available!

Be well, and feel free to email me about anything,

.. Adam
