It's been a few weeks—sorry to leave you hanging!

One of the advantages of self-publishing my essays is that there is no hard-and-fast length restriction, but this can have its downside.

A day or two before Thanksgiving, I jotted some initial notes about a standard sort of photo I'd seen in the local paper that week: a small boy posing with a dead deer he'd shot.

These notes grew over the next few weeks into this week's essay, a nearly 7,000-word recounting of the four deer hunts I've been on in two very different states and in very different company over the last decade or so, and what it's all taught me.

As always, it would be my honor if you choose to read it, and I hope you find it time well spent. (Maybe you should print it out and put it on your bedside table, or save it for the holiday break.)
