As many of you know, my work is rooted in undoing unconscious conditioning — seeing the ways in which our experiences have created deeply rutted and patterned ways of viewing ourselves and others and learning how to transform ourselves into more whole, more Conscious, and more connected humans. Ultimately, my work is to grow our collective Consciousness, one person at a time.
Throughout our lives, we are conditioned — in overt ways, through our relationships with our families, friends, and community members, and in covert ways by social “norms” and systems that hold in tact power structures and dynamics. This conditioning crystalizes into personal belief and societal ideology.
Unexamined conditioning upholds and perpatuates painful ways of operating in and relating to the world. Though there are many manifestations of unconscious conditioning, one of the more harmful ways this plays out is in the form of racism — the intentionally created and maintained system of hate-based-beliefs that can and must be dismantled.
In that vein, I invite you to join me for a screening of the documentary “Deconstructing Karen” at the Byrd Theater on May 25th for a radically honest conversation about race.
“Deconstructing Karen” explores the harmful, dangerous effects of white women's complicity in upholding white supremacy. This screening is an opportunity to reflect on our own behaviors and biases, and to challenge ourselves to actively work towards dismantling the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm marginalized communities.
I am honored to be working alongside a phenomenal group of women in Richmond to make this event possible and we want to fill all 750 seats. I hope that you will join us in community to explore this critically important piece to moving forward in our collective growth. Please come with friends, family, colleagues, and especially with an open mind and heart. We cannot have transformation without the friction that precipitates and creates change.
The screening of the documentary will be followed by a discussion with Ashley Williams, Richmond community leader and founder of The Well Collective, and Saira Rao, one of the documentary’s subjects and the co-author of White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better.
All proceeds from this event will benefit The Well Collective, a space that offers holistic services and educational workshops to support healing and well-being. A copy of the book White Women by Regina Jackson and Saira Rao is included in the ticket price.
BIPOC are invited to attend this event complimentary. Please use the code BeOurGuest at checkout.
