Self-development or Self-discovery?

I work with a lot of people who are steeped in the tools of self-development. Clients and students who come to me, having read all the books, done all the programs, and listened to all the podcasts aimed at self-development--at building and creating "better versions" of themselves and their lives.

And yet... they are still feeling unfulfilled, disconnected from a sense of meaning, wondering where is the person and life they've worked so hard to "manifest."

It's not inherently bad to explore the ways you can build yourself and grow yourself; its not bad to be curious about the aspects of yourself you can develop and cultivate. But doing so without also engaging in an ongoing practice and work of self-discovery will only get you so far.

Self-discovery allows us become more aware of who we truly are versus who the world has told us to be.

Self-discovery opens up the possibility of seeing more clearly what it is we want and why.

Self-discovery can provide us with a starting point on a trajectory that will lead us toward greater fulfillment and meaning.

Self-discovery is a process of seeing what conditioned patterning we've lived in and with for as long as we can remember, understanding how they keep us from what we want most, and presents us with the chance to discovery who we can be with out it.

Self-development without self-discovery leads us back into the same place we began our initial journey. As Jon Kabat-Zinn says, "wherever you go, there you are." Self-discovery can take many forms.

For me, the greatest and most impactful self-discovery practice has been meditation--specifically the practice I've been taught by my teacher, which isn't a practice of altered states, visualization, controlling my thoughts or my breath, using my mind to escape myself or the moment.

If you are interested in exploring this with me, I have many spaces and ways in which you can. Join me.
