Why is “happiness” so elusive? Because it is. That’s it’s nature. It comes and goes but does not ever stay [like everything else in life].
Happiness is not a science. It’s not something that you can create by figuring out the perfect ratio of this and that and the other thing. There is no precise equation for any one individual (or for whole groups of people, for that matter) that guarantees happiness.
The very idea that it can 1) be figured out and 2) be a permanent, fixed solution moves us squarely in the opposite direction of happiness, in fact.
Our certainty that it can and must exist in a permanent state keeps us from being available to the moments of happiness here, now, and we miss them - over and over again.
To be clear, there are always choices we can make to increase our joy, to create an overall sense of wellbeing, to move toward connection. And I encourage people to explore those things all the time.
The closest I’ve come to what I’d call “being happy in my life” is the result of, yes, making informed choices about what to include and exclude in my life to whatever degree I can.
But, perhaps more importantly, it is the ongoing work I do to remain open and fluid; to meet each new moment with curiosity and possibility rather than with what I *think* I know - about myself or the world.
It is in this space where there is possibility, inspiration, awe, creativity and deep connection to life as it is. I can tell you it is NOT happiness (though it contains moments of happiness) but it is alive, it is awake, and it contains very little internal conflict. I’ll take it over “happiness” any day.
, Ellie
