Hello, Friends:

I've been thinking a lot about two seemingly unrelated things lately: purpose and habit. I've been thinking about these things because I've been meandering through two excellent books over the past several weeks (yes, it takes that long when on a good week I *may* be lucky enough to read 10 pages!). And I wanted to not only share the titles with you but also share some thoughts on how I've been integrating the two. 

James Clear's book, Atomic Habits, was recommended to me by a wonderful coaching client of mine. His book explores what he considers to be the foundation of one's personal success in any area of life - the systems rather than the goals. As he says, "I believe that you do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." It's full of very creative and tangible ideas on ways to both break the "bad" habits as well as to establish new "good" habits.

The other book is all about challenging the idea that we should be only seeking "happiness" in life. The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed with Happiness, by Emily Esfahani Smith, explores the relationship between having a sense of meaning or purpose and how that creates a deeper, more fulfilling life.

Both books are well-written and informative in their own unique ways. But what I've loved most is exploring how the two can work together; we need to discover what brings meaning as well as understand the actions that are needed to keep us connected to that purpose. Without getting to the root of why you're doing what you're doing, any habits broken or built won't necessarily get you to a more fulfilled place in life. Likewise, without building an intentional "system" that supports staying aligned with that which feels most meaningful and purposeful in your life, we can easily diverge from those very things.

A statement that I often use with my coaching clients is: I (take this action - HABIT) SO THAT (the end result/outcome) which connects me to my "why" - PURPOSE). Here's an example from my life: I prioritize hard early morning workouts SO THAT my body and mind feel energized and grounded which connects me to being a more available and mentally balanced person.

I'd suggest starting with the end and working back toward the beginning - in other words, start with the purpose/meaning, determine what supports you in being more aligned with that, and then figure out what "habits" or intentional actions are needed to make it happen.

Donation-Based Meditation

Mondays, 7:15-8pm

Meditation is a state of being. We practice by sitting down, getting quiet and learning how to harness and direct our attention, waking us up to the full experience of the life again and again. As a result, we begin to actually be IN life, experiencing it fully. Seated practice allows us to learn about ourselves, about these wonderful and wild minds of ours, and about our humanness. Seated practice can provide us with the space to feel a deeper sense of wellbeing, vitality, and groundedness.

Join me for a donation-based meditation practice every-other-Monday evening from 7:15-8pm. The practice will include 35-40 minutes of semi-guided meditation and 5-10 minutes for guidance at the end of the sit. 

Suggested donation range: $5-$20
Participants will need to complete a waiver and can do so here, in advance, or upon arrival.
