Moving through life from a mindset of *what I already know* can give us the fleeting and more-instant relief of “certainty.”
We like to know. Knowing makes us feel solid. Knowing makes us feel like we’re in control.
But, in truth:
… it is actually restrictive, not open.
… it is actually limiting, not full of possibility.
… it is actually narrow, not expansive.
… it is actually inhibiting, not freeing.
I often say, “as soon as I think I know, I don’t,” because what I know now will grow and change and evolve if I let it… only if I stay open to the next moment.
There’s no final “I know.” And I think that’s tremendoulsy fortunate.
Moving into 2023, I’m encouraging you to choose to move through life from the lens of “what can I learn.”
“What can I learn” keeps us open, fluid, and attentive.
“What can I learn” requires us to stay conscious rather than to default to our unconscious patterns and perceptions.
“What can I learn” enriches and enlivens our experiences in life instead of flattening and deadening them.
So, moment by moment, when you feel yourself locking in. crystalizing around what you already know, try perceiving from a more open, curious place:
— not “what do I know” about this person but “what can I learn” about this person
— not “what do I know” about this situation” but “what can I learn” about this situation
— not “what do I know” about myself but “what can I learn” about myself
May you stay open to possibility, open to change, and open to being changed in this new year.
With Love,
