I heard someone reflecting on their past experiences and past mistakes - saying, with a voice full of shame and regret, “I wasn’t my highest self then.”

And I get that sentiment - I know that feeling well myself.

But it doesn’t sit with me well - maybe because I just don’t buy it anymore. 

I believe that we are always, always operating as the highest version of ourselves that we can, in the conditions that we are facing, and with whatever “tools” we have in our being-human toolbox at that particular moment in time. 

And I believe that we can always move higher. 

But that potential to move “higher” has to be accessed first through the willingness to look at oneself, to truly see oneself entirely. 

AND, then, through trying; trying to do better, to be better, to heal, to discover, to learn, to grow.

Higher versions of ourselves don’t just show up. They don’t just magically appear. We work at it. We try and try again. 

And again.

This understanding isn’t meant to be defeating but, rather, encouraging: you already are there and there is no limit.

This understanding allow us to

- grow from a place of compassion for ourselves (and others, btw)

- to move toward our next higher self with a sense of openness and fearlessness

- to notice the subtle, yet profound, ways in which we are always growing, always learning, always elevating

- and to stay curious about who we are yet to become

The opportunities to step up into a higher version of self are always available - each moment of challenge, each conflict, each moment of defeat, each heartbreak, each moment of shame… all are openings for us. 

Moving toward these things brings us higher.
