audiobook, goodreads links now available
I have the worst movie hangover from rewatching the 2010s Planet of the Apes movies in preparation for seeing the new one. I hadn’t seen them since they were in theaters, but my god I forgot how good they are, how much I unironically love them, and how much I love Caesar as a character.
unfortunately, I also forgot how the third one ends. so now I am DISTRAUGHT.
and I can’t stop thinking about the films more generally because! my god! what great films! what a great character! damn!
anyway, some Real Updates for you this month, so that’s enough about my feelings on fictional apes.

odds & ends
recent reads
Skye Quinlan’s Don’t Be a Drag, which is such a fiercely queer book inside and out <3 it releases next week, so keep your eyes peeled!
recent listens
the soundtrack to Disney’s Wish on repeat because damn it slaps. the film itself isn’t the best (although I enjoyed it and don’t get why so many people are like IT SUCKED IT WAS SO BAD), but damn! the soundtrack!
recent watches
the 2010s Planet of the Apes, obviously, as well as the 2024 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I admit I’m devastated that Caesar wasn’t directly part of it, but it really felt like the other films, which is always where sequels (especially set after a time skip) fail for me. I probably won’t get the same level of brain rot with this film, but I would definitely watch it again, and I can already see an avenue for at least one sequel
recent birds
it’s warbler season, baby! thanks to an eight-hour guided bird tour through the zoo, I saw SO MANY BIRDS this month, including multiple warblers, many orioles, various shorebirds, and more. like. I can’t even pick a couple birds to focus on, because it was the Biggest Week in American Birding and there were just ALL THE BIRDS
jk I can pick ONE BIRD because this year I heard a SCARLET TANAGER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! scarlet tanagers come through during migration but are notoriously hard to spot, and they are THE bird on my list of birds I’d like to see one day. still haven’t seen one, but I heard one omg
additionally, fun fact! two years ago I saw an American white pelican in the area and went lmfao is that a pelican?? welp, not only was that a pelican, but as of last year, pelicans have been confirmed to be nesting in Ohio for the first time ever. what???

until next time!
