Should it be legal for a child to be named Pierre?
The Problem with Pierre
There are hundreds, if not thousands of names to give a baby. Jim, John, James, Jacob, Jamie. Those are all examples of names you could give a baby boy, and I thought of them off the top of my head in a matter of seconds.
Yet, year after year, some people choose to name their babies "Pierre".
There have been many famous Pierre's over the years.
According to ranker the top 5 most famous men named Pierre are as follows:
- Pierre Boulez - French Composer
- Pierre Hantai - French Composer
- Pierre Fresno - French Composter
- Pierre Etaix - French Clown
- Pierre Casiraghi - French Guy
I even made up #3, but it really doesn't matter. The name "Pierre" means rock or stone. I think you got rocks or stones in your head if you think you should name your baby Pierre.

Luckily, it seems as though the tides are turning against the name. According to OhBabyNames.com, the foremost expert on naming babies:
Pierre is not a popular name in America and he's coming dangerously close to dropping off the Top 1000 list altogether. Unless you're a bonafide French-speaking American, naming your son Pierre might come off as snobby or pretentious. It's like putting your kid into a French immersion preschool.
As it remains today, it is legal to name your child "Pierre". Please write to your senators and congressman and be the change you want to see in the world.
