📰 News this Week

🛠️ Details emerge for St Mark’s park bridge

After missing the recent Culture & Communities Committee meeting it was scheduled for, a detailed Council briefing on the state of the closed St Mark’s Park footbridge landed this week - circulated to Councillors and local Community Councils.

It lays out the structural damage to the bridge - and catalogues many in other parts of the country of a similar design where issues have arisen too. Possible alternatives are also considered, along with the cost of replacement and also the high costs of redirecting services carried by the bridge, which has onlookers questioning why the Council is expected to pay to deal with such utilities in a replacement project, rather than the owners of them…

These high costs in turn drive the timeline, with funds needing to be assigned in the 2027-2028 financial year leading to the earliest estimate of replacement works landing in early 2028. Pretty bleak stuff for the community that make use of this vital quiet link in the north of the city.

New Town & Broughton Community Council host a copy of the briefing below.

🏅 Spokes announce competition winners

Spokes celebrate their annual competition’s winners on the theme of ‘Spokes and Me’, as ever with some glorious personal stories and accompanying photographs. There’s a summary on their website with a link to the full PDF of winning entries, which makes for a lovely and inspiring read.

📖 ‘Spokes and Me’ Stories

🚦 UK Government roadworks consultation

One of the more frustrating aspects of cycling in Edinburgh, with its nascent and ‘bitty’ cycling network, are the roadworks that come with so much subterranean street space being occupied by various utilities that inevitably require maintenance from time to time — and utility companies’ general failure to adequately provide for cycling around them while excavated.

This might take the form of signage about roadworks blocking the cycleway, or in some cases mean whole sections of ‘first class’ infrastructure like CCWEL being blocked - often accompanied by ‘Cyclists Dismount’ signage, which seems reasonable until you consider those using cycles as a mobility aid, hand-cyclists, parents with kid-laden cargo bikes, all of whom would at the very least struggle to dismount and push - in some cases this is impossible.

If we want our cycle networks to be robust and reliable, then we also need compliance requirements for roadworks to ensure that cycling is catered for, be that with cycle-friendly diversions or accommodations, appropriate signage or other affordances to get away from just ‘closing’ vital infrastructure for vulnerable road users - including pedestrians. That’s where a new UK Government consultation comes in - and more importantly, your response to it.

📄 “Updating the safety at street works and road works code of practice” over at Gov.UK: there is a PDF of the new draft ‘Code of Practice’, followed by an online survey to fill out - closing 14th December.

📣 Hard times continue for Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative as former workers speak out: Staff reveal “unachievably high pressure” and “stubborn resistance to change” behind Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative’s descent into ‘pre-pack’ administration over on Road.cc »

⚡ Local MP Dr Scott Arthur reported on a Westminster roundtable discussion on illegal e-motorbikes (see? It’s not hard…) this week, confirming that a debate has been tabled in the House of Commons on the matter.

Posts about the meeting on social media saw the usual responses about the misuse of the term ‘e-bike’ - by us and others on Bluesky and a particularly thorough point about how the Department for Transport refers to them by Ben Furfie in the comments on Facebook.

But — putting aside the insistence on calling a spade an illegally modified garden fork — it’s good to see some degree of progress on the matter even if thus far it’s just some chat while avoiding eye contact with the lack of enforcement of existing laws.

🙄 A local Councillor in Morningside appeared to have jumped the gun this week with a Facebook post celebrating that the Voi parking location on Midmar Drive - an on-carriageway location that is claimed in the post to be interfering with adjacent pavement passage - would be removed by Friday 16th and the operating zone adjusted. Officers had stated that a date was not set and an alternative location will be sought out first before any closure takes place, however at time of writing it appears that the location has indeed been removed leaving a significant gap at the scheme’s southern boundary.

This creates issues not only for local residents actively participating in the scheme but also anyone facing parking capacity issues at Morningside Station; and it’s utterly backwards to see a Councillor celebrating the removal of a transport node - imagine if this was a bus stop?

🧱 From Living Streets Edinburgh on Facebook:

Image: Living Streets Edinburgh on Facebook

We’re continuing to ask The City of Edinburgh Council to complete some small improvements to the Roseburn-Canal Link - a ££ multimillion, award-winning scheme. In particular, providing a proper walking route to the ‘Lidl steps' in Dalry Community Park, and a stepped alternative to the ramp on Russell Road. We also understand that a hearing about the Duff St access CPO [Compulsory Purchase Order] will be held in December.

Seeing this inevitable desire line form and then go to mud each winter is really frustrating - hopefully the Council see sense and commission more path works here. The post also calls for a set of steps to the Roseburn Path at the mid-point bend of Russell Road, to allow pedestrian access straight to the path from pavement level avoiding the zig-zag ramps.

🔗 A couple of good links sent over by the fine folks at Edinburgh RC this week:

“If you are 5-15 years old and enjoy cycling… our Go-Ride sessions are dedicated to teaching skills, having fun and getting fit in a safe, traffic-free environment. From there we provide pathways to introduce girls and boys to a wide range of cycle sports, including mountain biking, cyclocross, road-circuit racing and track racing. All sessions take place off-road although there may be a need to ride on low-traffic roads between locations.

“These sessions build on the skills developed at IBike, Bikeability and the Active Travel initiatives in Edinburgh Schools. They will provide a strong basis for physical and social well-being that can aid young riders' development and personal confidence.” — ERC Youth Page »

🍜 Great follow-up on the matter of Deliveroo’s telemetry by Adam Tranter on LinkedIn:

“Deliveroo say they are going to use GPS and speed data to find riders on illegal e-bikes and remove them from the platform.

”I've been calling for this for a long time. The platforms have always held the data (how else do you know when your order is going to turn up?). Anyone sustaining 30mph across a city is riding an unregistered, uninsured motorbike in law, and the app’s own records should show it.” — more here »

🏞️ Holyrood Park High Road: Closed due to rockfall. A short dismount is necessary to avoid a fenced off area.

🌉 St Marks Path: Bridge over Water of Leith closed due to structural issues. The road bridge at Warriston Rd or pedestrian bridge at Beaverhall Rd may offer alternate routes.

🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding, including the path below. The south-east bridge over the Union Canal requires a dismount whilst kerbs are altered.

🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.

🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.

🤝 Who do we want?

  • Someone who is interested in helping our community reduce food waste and food poverty

  • Someone who can commit to a regular shift every week

  • Preferably someone who is a confident bike rider and has prior food handling experience - but not essential. Training is provided.

🔗 What roles are available?

  • Food collector (Night shift, shifts run from 8:15pm to 10pm)

🙌 What’s in it for you?

  • Being part of a genuinely inclusive organisation.

  • Learning about foodsharing and cooperative organisations.

  • Free food!

  • Volunteering makes you a full member of the coop for free.

🚲 The Bike Station - can you volunteer with us? 🚲

Help us make cycling more accessible and connect people with the joy of a bicycle. We have a fantastic team of volunteers who support us in many ways, so please do reach out if you'd like to be part of the team.

📦 Online Sales Support volunteer 📦

Do you have a good eye for detail with some experience with online sales? Do you like tinkering with unique bike parts and connecting these with keen customers?

We are looking for a new online sales support volunteer, who will lead on our eBay sales; from photographing, writing descriptions, communicating with buyers, to carefully packing and sending packages out. This is a fantastic way to ensure we maximise revenue from the brilliant salvaged parts and donations we receive - allowing this to be funneled straight back into supporting our overall mission and communities programmes.

Ideally the incoming volunteer would be able to get involved from start-mid October, to allow for crossover with the outgoing team member. The minimum commitment is 3-4 hours per week, with in store time spent at our Gorgie shop ideally on a Thursday or Friday.

🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers:

Our main requirement for volunteers at the moment are volunteers to help support on our Fix Your Own Bike (FYOB) sessions; notably those able to support the Saturday sessions which run from weekly 1-4pm.

The ideal candidate would be someone with extensive bike maintenance experience and someone who would feel comfortable articulating ideas and advice to members of the public. These sessions are a valuable resource for shared learning, lower cost self repairs and are a great community addition to the Edinburgh cycling landscape. Being volunteer-led, we cannot keep up with demand without the brilliant team that helps to operate the sessions. If either of these roles are of interest, please contact [email protected] to discuss the role in more detail; it would be wonderful to hear from you. As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.

💬 From Merchiston Districts Community Council:

Polwarth and Merchiston Road Safety schemes are developing well and need your input - we’re pleased to share a mega-update on several key road safety initiatives within our Community Council area, focused on the Merchiston Ave / Polwarth Crescent / Yeaman Place corridor.

The junction at Merchiston Avenue / Rochester Terrace will be also redesigned this year, following a successful submission by our Community Council to CEC’s Local Traffic Improvement Programme… The CEC road safety team has now proposed significantly widened pavements at all four corners of the junction, which will create a much shorter crossing radius for pedestrians, and improve sightlines for drivers and pedestrians and cyclists alike. The narrowed junction would also force speed reduction and discourage larger vehicles (especially HGVs) from using this road as a rat run. There will be ground-level planters here as well, and which will be placed to deter illegal parking which also blocks sightlines. CEC wants to hear your views! If you have any views on these proposed improvements, please fill out this short survey.

The same survey also covers proposals for further up the road, at the junction with Colinton Road:

We are delighted to share that CEC is also examining how to make improvements for this heavily used junction (near Starbucks and Tesco), which also happens to be an entry point for the Merchiston Ave / Polwarth Crescent / Yeaman Place rat run. We are in touch with the Road Safety Officer managing the scheme, and will share updates once the project is further along. Tell us what you think! If you have any views on this junction (problems and ideas for improvements), please fill out the survey.

📋 The Council’s consultation report for Barnton Connections has now been published, and is available to read on the project website;

🎭 With works on the refurbishment of the King’s Theatre concluded, but commencement on the build of this ‘missing link’ cycle route not due until next year, there were concerns that potentially Tarvit Street — part of the new route and closed to motor traffic for around four years during works on the theatre — might be reopened to through-traffic and add to an already busy junction and close again shortly afterwards. Instead, a modal filter will be installed at the junction of Tarvit St and Drumdryan St — which will be made one-way — so motor traffic will only be permitted one-way round a loop of Tarvit westbound, Drumdryan north and then east, returning to Brougham St - with two-way cycling allowed on both arms of the loop. — More details [PDF] »

📝 The good folks at Spokes have spotted a planning application 24/05843/FUL for a “Cycle path link connection and associated works from Gogar Station Road south to land east of 1 Gogar Station Road” - though they also note in their Bluesky post the width of the path being around a meter less than design guidance would instruct…

  • A quarterly behind-the-scenes update sharing subscriber numbers / growth, promotional efforts, and other stuff about the running of edi.bike;

  • A shiny 'Supporters Club' sticker;

  • Over time, we might also consult Club patrons on strategic decisions and other matters.

If you can't support us in this way, that's grand too - thanks for reading!
