📰 News this Week
⚓ Foot of the Walk to Dock St official opening ceremony
⚓ The Leith Connections Foot of the Walk to Dock St route had its official opening on Wednesday 18th, followed by a joint event between the Council and Walk Wheel Cycle Trust officially launching the Edinburgh edition of the Walking and Cycling Index at Duncan Place.
As well as a media opportunity featuring pupils from local schools - see our photos below - we also took the opportunity to film the ‘after’ comparison footage following our documenting of the route for Youtube back in September 2024:

🧭 ‘North Edinburgh Connections’ consultation launches
New plans are available for council scheme North Edinburgh Connections:
We want to make your streets safer and easier for everyone to get around. In North Edinburgh Connections (formerly NEAT-Connections) we’re proposing changes to roads, pavements and public spaces along West Granton Road, Pennywell Road, and Ferry Road.
Changing streets makes it easier and safer for everyone in the community to get to local shops, schools and other community facilities.
Some big interventions on this route, given the moderate distance it covers - including some very interesting large-scale roundabouts with cycleways and crossings.
Taking on such infrastructure seems to cost a pretty penny, though - critics rightly ask whether the £8m budget could be more effectively spent.
📝 See plans & respond to consultation »🙃 Emergency motion ruled ‘not urgent’ on Quiet Route - your support is needed
After two Councillors were censured by the Standards Commission [PDF] for failing to disclose they lived adjacent to the Greenbank to Meadows quiet route during workshops and votes at the Transport Committee, the woes rumbled on this week for this important active travel corridor:
👀 We published something of a summary of where we’re up to, last issue;
📅 Transport and Environment Committee (‘TEC’) Convener Cllr Stephen Jenkinson confirmed in the Edinburgh Evening News that the current measures are under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (‘ETRO’) that is set to expire on 15th June;
⚠️ Green party Councillor Chas Booth tabled an emergency motion at the City of Edinburgh’s Full Council meeting on Thursday 19th, which was ruled as ‘not urgent’ by the Lord Provost 8m into the webcast recording:
Clerk: And the fifth one [emergency motion] is by Councillor Booth, implications of Standards Commission decision for Green Bank to Meadows Quiet Route.
Lord Provost: That also is not an emergency.
Cllr Chas Booth: Point of order, Lord Provost. In terms of Standing Order 4.4, please can I ask for the reasons that the emergency motion on the Standards Commission implications is ruled not urgent in particular given that if there is no decision of the Council before the 15th of June the quiet route will be ripped out?
Lord Provost: My understanding is that we are in a legally competent position - that the Transport and Environment Committee took a decision on how to proceed on this while the inquiry was underway and that there is therefore no legal reason why we need to proceed as a matter of emergency at this stage, but I'm sure the convener of Transport and Environment Committee has heard what you have said today and that the matter will be dealt with at the next TEC committee, which happens I think quite shortly in April.
🤔 The Labour administration has not confirmed a motion for the Transport & Environment Committee meeting on 2nd April, though it is consulting with officers on “a procedurally correct and legal way forward”;
📄 We understand the Green group have resubmitted a version of their emergency motion to be heard at April’s TEC meeting, so the matter will be heard there regardless.
With the ups, downs and a vocal (but minority) opposition to some aspects of the scheme, it’s understandable that the Council are looking to put this debacle behind them. However, it’s really important that we don’t lose sight of the fact that without significant and timely intervention, a key safe travel corridor through the south of the city will be lost - reintroducing rat-running traffic to quiet, residential streets that have now had filtering measures in place for half a decade.
The timing here is really tight, and to some extent it looks like the measures simply expiring would be desirable to those who have seen this drag on for years through political mismanagement, weak will and missing integrity and just want to stop hearing about it - but this would be a huge mistake impacting on the safety of folk walking, wheeling and cycling to schools, jobs, care responsibilities and other destinations in the project area.
📮 Are you affected? If you live on or adjacent to the route, in the Council wards that it runs through, or travel through the route from other wards and can spare a few minutes - write to your local councillors in support and voicing concerns about the loss of this route, especially a loss on technicalities alone; and consider also addressing your message to members of the Transport & Environment Committee. Don’t forget to include your name and address, which can help verify your response as being from a resident in the ward your councillors represent.
🏰 Local Bits
📷 As bollards go in at Elm row, we posted a few photos to Bluesky showing the impact on parking encroachment on the cycleway - now vastly improved - and highlight the bits that have been naïvely designed without bollards or street furniture preventing access, meaning areas intended for pedestrian movement are still lousy with badly parked vehicles;

🏴 Delivery Plan for Scotland’s National Transport Strategy
Surprisingly, this isn’t just a one-pager with a napkin sketch of an ostrich with its head in the sand.
The fifth Delivery Plan for Scotland’s National Transport Strategy has been published, highlighting the ways in which the Scottish Government is supporting the delivery of a sustainable, safe, inclusive, resilient transport system that is accessible to all.
I like the bit where we hide the real term cuts to the Active Travel budget by lumping Bus Infrastructure funding in, and call it progress. Fan-dabby-dozy.
🗺️ Glasgow City Council cuts cycleway targets by 80%

Alistair Davidson, on Facebook:
“Glasgow City Council, who some years ago announced a plan for 270km of cycle lanes by 2030, now intend to build 54km by 2032. They blame Transport Scotland.” — more on Pressreader »

🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

🚲 The Bike Station Gorgie: shop volunteers needed! 🚲
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new shop volunteers in The Bike Station’s Gorgie branch!
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. Gorgie is also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
We are currently looking for volunteers who can offer a weekly commitment of 3-4 hours on a Friday or Saturday afternoon. If this could be of interest, please contact [jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk](mailto: jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk) to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
