🙃 Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route: Councillors censured by Standards Commission, Braids estate modal filters will return to Transport Committee
Everyone’s favourite long-running ‘low traffic neighbourhood’ saga reared its tired head again this week, as two Councillors involved in the vote to rip out modal filters on the Greenbank to Meadows quiet route — still yet to be removed, two years later — were censured by the Standards Commission [PDF] for failing to disclose they lived adjacent to the route during workshops and votes at the Transport Committee.
Indeed, in the case of Cllr Neil Ross, our understanding is that he wasn’t even a regularly attending transport committee member at the time of the vote, which makes his substitution by the Lib Dems specifically for that vote all the more dubious; while Conservative Cllr Marie-Claire Munro continues to run in the Scottish Parliamentary elections on a platform that includes [FB] “asking for the opportunity to represent Edinburgh South with integrity”, assumedly providing she finds some down the side of the sofa cushions or in the wee bowl in the hallway where the keys live.
📄 Our Article & quotes from Councillors »🎤 Tonight (Monday 16th): Scottish Elections Hustings with Spokes & Cycling UK, Augustine United Church
🎤 Spokes are hosting a hustings event tonight, Monday 16th March for the 2026 Scottish Parliamentary election, to hear from Holyrood candidates on cycling and related policies.
The hustings starts at 7.30pm, ending 9.30pm with doors open from 6.45pm for coffee, stalls and chat at 📌 Augustine United Church, George IV Bridge.
If you have a question for all candidates please email it in advance to spokes@spokes.org.uk with the subject line hustings question. Note that questions to individual candidates can only be asked in person at the meeting, after their initial speech.

⚓ The Leith Connections Foot of Walk to Dock St route has been completed — which in future should connect with an additional phase from Seafield to Hawthornvale, and a leg off to Ocean Terminal. There’s an official opening this week from 10am this Wednesday 18th March, at the bridge on Sandport Place. There will be a ribbon cutting, a Spokes stall, repairs from Dr Bike and Porty Community Energy will have Cargo Bikes to try out.

📍 More great work from The Workers’ Observatory: Edinburgh food delivery riders map the dangers they face at work

The mapping project was also a way to create a collective space for riders to share their stories and experiences of fear and concern for health and safety at work and to think about what could be done to support and protect one another.
In October 2025, the Workers’ Observatory held a workshop dedicated to risks and dangers faced by riders. We focused on facilitating conversations among riders about the incidents they had faced while doing food delivery work in Edinburgh.

📰 Edinburgh Evening News: Report on future of George St and Princes St to come to Transport Committee ‘in the Autumn’: convener Cllr Stephen Jenkinson shared to Bluesky “My concern here is we have spent a decade discussing George Street and delivered nothing. Unless there is some compromise across the political groups in the Council we’ll still be talking about ‘what should be done’ with Princes Street in 2036!”
🐞 Excellent 30-second promotional video for The Cycling Gardners on their Facebook page this week;
☔ Worried about the effects of climate change on Edinburgh’s landscape? Don’t tackle the problem at source by discouraging unnecessary vehicle travel to Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens by providing safe and green alternatives like cycling and public transport, just make the Arboretum Pl linear car park a bit more flood resilient by sticking a handful of rain gardens in!
Visionary work from the City of Edinburgh Council, whose new plans for the area manage to include zero affordances for safe cycling (barring some new cycle parking at the entrance to the Botanics, never mind if you get there in the first place). As a bonus, the designers have thrown in some dangerous-looking end-on blue badge bay parking spaces that look lovely if you like symmetrical drawings; but as anyone who’s ever actually seen a car driven in real life can tell you, those vehicles are getting abruptly reversed out into your path as you ride through one of the most car-centric streetscape proposals we’ve seen rendered in recent years.
This project started as an active travel led project on Arboretum Place with the connection of Inverleith Park to the west gate of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The project work has evolved to include the entire Arboretum Place and SuDS, sustainable drainage systems, such as raingardens, into the street improvements proposed. The Council's Flood Management team is now leading on this work and progressing consultation in the design stage — Online Consultation
I’m sure the Council’s Flood Management team are lovely people. I’m also sure they’re not who we need designing safer streets if they’re there to prioritise mitigating the effects of climate change over mitigating the causes of it, and skipping out on road space reallocation along the way.

👷 Cllr Caldwell’s hard work on Leith Walk issues continues, with a feature in the Herald — including the noble idea that “the council is also considering installing additional loading bays to discourage vehicles from parking on pavements.”
That will do it. Alternatively? Ticket the lorries and vans that riddle the pavements and cycleway there with cracks and breakages, and install bollards at sites with repeated issues. Fine businesses taking irresponsibly parked loading in. Design projects with street furniture that naturally blocks vehicle incursion; and take all of this into account before the horse has felt the breeze in its mane and left the stable door long behind.
Bollards seem to be going in at Elm Row - hopefully the changes on the ground here are extensive enough to tackle the continued parking encroachment on the cycleway as well as myriad other issues with the public realm here.

🌷 Bridgend Farmhouse have their Spring Fair on Saturday, March 28th, 11am - 3pm - featuring market stalls, led bike rides, kids activities, cafe, handmade goods, talks, repair cafe, circus skills, free bike checks, fresh pakora, make do and mend, and lego! 🛶 Bridge 8 Hub recently shared a great story with some ace photos on Facebook about those lamentable moments when your Brompton can’t transform into a kayak…
📗 A Wee Pedal — who deliver first-class cycling for beginners (and resumers!) of all ages as well as led rides for locals and tourists alike — first began in part due to their family’s experience of cycling as a therapeutic tool and mobility aid for their son Jack, allowing them to continue cycling together as a family following his diagnosis with Perthes disease.
Now, Jack’s father Richard Farmer has written a book about their experiences, which he will be also giving a talk on (and have copies available) at the Bridgend Farmhouse Spring Fair [FB] on the 28th March. More info on their Instagram post »

Also new in print is Edition 3 of Spokes’ “Favourite Cycle Rides in Edinburgh & the Lothians” book, with rides from recent competition entries.

Each ride description includes an overall map, basic route instructions, a photo, information about the prizewinner, and why the ride is a favourite. The booklet is designed to accompany Spokes maps, which can be used to check the fine detail of each ride, and how it fits into the area’s local cycle network. Each ride has symbols telling you which Spokes map(s) it relates to, how long the ride might take you, and whether there are any nearby rail stations.
The rides vary from under an hour (at a gentle pace) within the city to Lothians rides of up to three hours.
The book will be sent out free to Spokes members in April - including if you join Spokes now - or is otherwise £3 from Spokes events, stalls - or soon, via local shops.
📸 Wee photo post on Bluesky from Dr Scott Arthur MP, after an interesting visit to Brompton’s factory. Finally, a bike that folds away just as easily as whether or not it’s politically expedient to be a cyclist at any given moment…

🚲 The Bike Station Gorgie: shop volunteers needed! 🚲
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new shop volunteers in The Bike Station’s Gorgie branch!
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. Gorgie is also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
We are currently looking for volunteers who can offer a weekly commitment of 3-4 hours on a Friday or Saturday afternoon. If this could be of interest, please contact jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.

A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
