📰 News this Week
🗺️ City Scope launches new ‘Cycle Scope’ roadworks and route plans map of Edinburgh

Harry Williams at City Scope has been slurping up all of Edinburgh’s data again, this time festooning a map with all of the ‘active travel’ related roadworks, route plans (new, consulted on and newly permanent) and created Cycle Scope, an online map-based exploration tool. Worth a look especially on a nice big screen - have a read of our dive into it below, teasing out what some of the different layers and filters can be useful for (there’s a lot to see!).
🏴 Cycling Scotland: “How safe infrastructure is helping more people to cycle”
Rising modal share for cycling journeys in the stats from recent traffic surveys on new cycle routes in Glasgow, as well as some data from Edinburgh’s CCWEL, Leith Walk, and newly installed Great Junction Street cycleway.
🏰 Local Bits
✊ It’s the last week of February, and that means Edinburgh Critical Mass riding out this Saturday 28th at 2pm, from 📍 Middle Meadow Walk with the route published to their social media channels a couple of days before;
🪧 A lack of advanced signage for the Water of Leith path repairs at Woodhall / Spylaw Park caught a number of folks out this week - unfortunate too that all diversion routes for these works involve so much hill climb! As we understand it, this was one of the first sections of flexipave laid when the surface was first installed, and the layers appear to have delaminated resulting in sections that have come apart and become ‘cut up’, leading to these path repair works.
⚙️ Spokes have issued their February action update [PDF] featuring campaigning news, lots of information about their upcoming parliamentary hustings, and a lovely feature about seasoned Spokes campaigner and path builder Peter Hawkins.
Also covered in the update, the Leith Connections project has delivered the Council’s finished Foot of Walk to Dock St route — which in future should connect with an additional phase from Seafield to Hawthornvale, and a leg off to Ocean Terminal. There’s an official opening from 10am on Wednesday 18th March, at the bridge on Sandport Place.
There will be a ribbon cutting, a Spokes stall, repairs from Dr Bike and Porty Community Energy will have Cargo Bikes to try out.
📷 Some lovely photos on Instagram from Porty Community Energy’s winter fun ride to the Botanics;

🍕 Vital new report coming soon from The Workers’ Observatory:
The Workers’ Observatory has collaborated with the Scottish Occupational Road Safety Alliance (ScORSA) to produce a new report, titled Well-Being, Health, and Road Safety in On-Demand Delivery Work.
Authored by Dr Karen Gregory and Boyan Karabaliev, the report reviews evidence from academic research, governments, and non-government organisations. It shows that workplace safety regulations, considered standard in most industries, are inadequate or fully lacking when it comes to app-based ridehailing and delivery services. Payments per task completed, rather than by the hour, often force workers to prioritise speed over safety on the road. Combined with low pay rates, limited training and support, and poor cycling infrastructure in many places, this creates an environment where workers have to deal with multiple sources of stress, anxiety, and fatigue, further increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
They are hosting a webinar tomorrow, Tuesday 24th at 11am - more details here »
🍻 As seen on Instagram, the Edinburgh Dawn Patrol folks who are fundraising for the My Name’5 Doddie foundation are hosting a pub quiz on the evening of 6th March in Stockbridge, £15 per ticket »
Speaking of the Dawn Patrol crew, Markus has a new video out this week:
In his latest short film, Still A Race, supported by Schwalbe UK, Markus Stitz documents the experience of racing an unsupported bikepacking ultra through Norway’s breathtaking landscapes. The 10-minute documentary, filmed at the 2024 edition of Mother North, is now available to watch for free on YouTube.
💰 This Thursday 26th will see a ‘full Council’ Budget meeting at the City Chambers, with the great, the good and the devoid of good sense all putting forward their pitches for how finances are prioritised for 2026-27 and capital budgets for 2026-36 (all links to PDFs): the Labour Administration proposal, the SNP group budget, the Lib Dem position, and the Green group budget.
Rather than submit a budget proposal, the Conservative group decided to instead submit a heady piece of satirical self-deprecation — including blaming cycleways for congestion, in the same document featuring the heading “Data-driven, evidence led budget decision making” — that wouldn’t be out of place on stage as a fringe show. 🎭

🚆 If you’ve ever wondered exactly what bikes, trikes and other transport you can and can’t carry on Scotrail trains, check out their handy poster [PDF]

💙 Closes Saturday 28th: PARIS. [5] December 2025 – Association EBN today is launching 2nd annual €5,000 Architecture and Arts grant for young adults in the memory of Emma Burke Newman.
The grant supports the realization of a community-shaping artistic, educational, or cross-cultural project by a young adult (17-35) residing in the EEA, the U.K., or U.S. in the fields of art, architecture, or place-making—including ones that address cycling or road safety—and reflecting the values of Emma Burke Newman.
“The grant is dedicated to the memory of Emma, to honor her compassion, community, and creativity as well as her zest for life and learning,” said association President Rose Marie Burke and the young woman’s mother. Tragically, Emma was killed by a truck driver while she was cycling to university on Jan. 27, 2023, in Glasgow.
