📰 News this Week
🚲 Edinburgh hire bike supplier 'Voi' host press launch ahead of 3rd September start date
Voi’s electric bike hire will open to the public on Wednesday, 3rd September - for all the details we have so far, check out our press event coverage over on the website »
(And shout out to Cllr Ross McKenzie for linking us with this ancient artefact from the 2018 Serco ‘Just Eat Bikes’ launch…)
✊🏼 People on bikes are second on Edinburgh’s sustainable transport hierarchy, which is surely why three of them got hit by drivers last week
🥀 Forewarning: driver collisions, losses, death of a child
After a relentless week of cycle accidents at the hands of the city’s car drivers - infrequently reported on here, as that’s not really our ‘lane’ - many of us hit a tipping point and needed to do something about it. A last-minute, Critical-Mass-style protest was organised for Friday night, taking in winding loops through the city passing through and ‘reclaiming’ the sites of the three accidents.
We met to brief about the ride at the Millenium Milepost in the Meadows; and as beautifully and eloquently as ever in the wake of losing her dear friend Emma Burke-Newman to an HGV driver in Glasgow, Shellie took a moment to decry the brutally unjust consequences for the man responsible for the death of 11-year-old cyclist Thomas Wong in March last year, whose sentencing took place this week.
We live in a society where the report — following an enquiry into the death of a child — will happily list that he probably didn’t fulfil his childhood duty to look out expectantly for an inattentively driven HGV to rumble out of a car park and kill him; but it won’t call out NWH, a privately owned waste management business for failing to staff its trucks with a banksman, monitor its cab surveillance for REPEATED mobile phone use while wielding a heavy goods vehicle, or train its drivers on how to look out their fucking windows on a school route.
So we ride.
We’re angry, we hold both despair and hope for something better in our hearts, and we take to our bikes together; taking over busy streets, raising smiles and blood pressure readings (far more of the former than the latter, as is always the case with mass rides), we protest and call out this absolute bullshit motocentricity and inadequacies of justice, infrastructure and basic humanity… and we ride.
🫵🏼 You can ride too — join Critical Mass at 2pm this Saturday, Middle Meadow Walk. Follow for a route map nearer the time »
✍🏽 Our Open Letter with Spokes to the City of Edinburgh Council
As per our ‘extra’ issue last week;
Spokes, the Lothian cycle campaign, have co-authored an open letter with edi.bike to the Conveners of the Transport & Environment Committee and Traffic Regulation Orders Sub-Committee, regarding issues with the handling of the ‘Travelling Safely’ East Areas ETRO, and its implications for the whole Travelling Safely programme. The Open Letter is co-signed by sixteen of Edinburgh's most prominent Active Travel organisations and calls for greater scrutiny on the actions and process of the TRO Sub-Committee in the face of the potential loss of key safe routes for Edinburgh residents who rely on cycling to move around the city.
Along with the letter itself, see also the transcript we’ve produced of the Traffic Regulation Orders Sub-Committee’s special meeting on August 7th.
The Sub-Committee convenes again on September 4th, to decide on the outcome of the East Areas ETRO and more.
🌿 Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (ECCAN) ‘Greenlight’ funding - open for voting
The Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (ECCAN) mission is to foster community-led initiatives in Edinburgh that address the climate and nature emergency, aiming for a just, thriving, and resilient city.
- 🚦 Greenlight funding is now available to vote on, by this Friday 29th;
- 💚 You can become an ECCAN member in order to vote, for free;
- 🗳️ There are several programmes up for funding by orgs that promote active travel in the city; we’ve done our best to summarise these below, but do have a look at the full list »
- 🚳 Some of the programmes we’re highlighting are by orgs who don’t exclusively tackle active travel, and their project might not be cycling-adjacent. Still wishing them luck 🍀 and encouraging you to vote for them.
💷 Category A: £10,001 - £20,000
🚲 A6: Commuter Bike Buddies and Buses (Wee Spoke Hub)
Disclaimer: We’re involved in this one!
Our Commuter Bike Buddies and Buses (CBBBs) project will deliver two programmes to support commuters to cycle to work:
- A buddy system for new cycle-commuters;
- Commuter bike buses, for group-safety in traffic.
⚡️ A8: Cosy homes and connected communities (Porty Community Energy)
This collaborative project consists of two strands taking place in Craigmillar and Niddrie: 1. Home energy efficiency improvements and skills building by the Edinburgh Tool Library (ETL) Retrofixers and 2. Community empowerment and knowledge building around future heat networks by Porty Community Energy (PCE) and Craigmillar and Niddrie Matters (CAN Matters).
💷 Projects to choose from: Category C: £1,001 - £5,000
📝 C5: Putting Climate Awareness into a Local Place Plan (BANZAI)
Local Place Plans are part of Scottish planning legislation giving communities a say in how land is used in their area. These plans influence the city’s future development and are a vital opportunity to make climate and community voices heard. Our plan will focus on integrating climate resilience, equity, and local needs into the heart of planning decisions.
🚲 C20: Bikes for Refugees New Scots Welcome Pack
Bikes for Refugees (Scotland) will provide 50 isolated and socio-economically disadvantaged refugees and asylum seekers with access to free bicycles and cycling accessories (New Scots Welcome Packs). Bikes are donated by communities and refurbished by volunteers from our community hub with support from professional and qualified staff. We are more than a bike project. Rescued and refurbished bikes are given a 2nd life and provide essential mobility and freedom of movement to refugees and asylum seekers.
📦 C21: CADi cargo bike delivery cooperative
Our next step is to move to a larger secure premises with enough space to store our bikes and potentially add more bikes, as well as carry out other tasks such as regular bike maintenance. We also plan to purchase more bikes to increase our capacity and resilience to mechanical issues, or even required scheduled maintenance on multiple bikes simultaneously. Addressing both of these issues will give us the confidence to expand our service to more customers and start offering paid work to more people.
🔧 C23: Cargo Bike Upkeep (Goodies SCIO)
Our Cargo Bike Upkeep project will allow us to stop even more waste by helping to look after the bikes that our volunteers use to redistribute food. Keeping our wheels safe and moving will help us to deliver vital support and tackle the issue of unnecessary waste in Edinburgh.

🅿️ Via weekly contributor, Robbie:
The Management Rules for parks came to the Culture and Communities Committee last Thursday.
The restriction on cycle parking was unfortunately proposed to be maintained, which wasn't discussed in the meeting either.
The reasoning given was that:
4.25 Several respondents were concerned about being unable to secure cycles to railings or other park infrastructure not dedicated or provided for this purpose, predominantly
where there is a lack of suitable cycle storage. The reason for drafting management rule 4.19, prohibiting the attachment of cycles to park infrastructure, is due to the damage caused by cycles being attached either through direct contact or by chains and other locking devices damaging paintwork. Many of the city’s spaces have cycle parking facilities. The Council will continue to invest in new facilities, liaising with the cycling community on suitable options.
Dear City of Edinburgh Council; you won’t generally get folk parking on the railings and posts if you provide adequate cycle parking, so if we’re doing this, take it as a sign you’re not providing enough. And we’ll continue to, because a) the general public pay very little heed to the letter of regulatory minutiae buried in a locked drawer in the basement of a High street vault, and b) the majority of the locks folk are carrying with them these days are coated with rubber, clothware or other protective material to avoid hurting the bike’s own paint, never mind fences and posts. A rule for the sake of a rule.
Completely failed to listen to folks saying over and over that this regulation won’t work during consultation. You have an unaddressed bike theft epidemic - don’t make rules that can’t practicably be followed.
🤦🏻 Some great work by Edinburgh Trams ensuring, for the sake of their tram stop crowd management, that anyone who chose to cycle to AC/DC at Murrayfield last week couldn’t use one of the very few close-by public cycle parking facilities…

🚋 Speaking of Trams - ahead of the pithily-titled ‘Trams from Granton to Edinburgh BioQuarter / Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and beyond And Probably other Words too’ consultation kicking off today, The Edinburgh Outdoors podcast has an episode called ‘Walking the Roseburn Path’ with Euan Baxter from the Save the Roseburn Path campaign exploring the space and what it means to locals and path users.

🏔️ Tomorrow: New term for School of Rocks!
Edinburgh School of Rocks is a women-led off-road cycling community. Every Autumn and Spring we run a 6 week term for novice off-road female, trans and non-binary riders to develop their skills in a supportive environment.
Our Autumn term is starting tomorrow, 26th August until the end of September. We meet every Tuesday night at 6.30pm at various locations around the City to make the most of Edinburgh’s best urban gravel trails.
To get involved please DM us on Instagram @edinburghschoolofrocks or email us edinburghsor@gmail.com
We look forward to introducing women to the joys of off-road riding and getting involved in this term. It’s likely to be a little darker and muddier than our spring term so come prepared.

📪 The week’s road closure info - many thanks to regular contributor Robbie for collating and preparing these:
🔥 Holyrood Park: closure of High Road until further notice amid concern that the recent gorse fire has damaged the rockface. Full closure of footway and road past Dunsapie Loch. Beware of bi-directional emergency services on remainder.
🏡 Whitehouse Loan: Section of Greenbank-Meadows QuietRoute obstructed by footway resurfacing works until end Sep. Update 25th August: Cycle access was advised to be unaffected, but closure signs and barriers placed between modal filter planters have impeded access for some widths of cycle by Strathearn Rd.
🚧 Albion Road: Obstruction of Quietroute 20 by repairs of burst sewer until late Aug. At time of writing, cycle access is possible. However, the Crawford Bridge may offer an alternate route.
🚧 Cargil Terrace: Closed at Wardie Primary School for SGN works until 31st August. Part of Wardie Road may also be closed. If you’re travelling between Wardie and Trinity, Darnell Rd or the Ferry Road Path may be alternatives.
Festival Closures:
🎪 Summertime Streets: Expanded closures for the August festivals this year. High St closed from 10:30am daily. Lawnmarket closed and Cowgate closed daily from 3pm, however access will be maintained for loading. Cycle access on Cockburn Street between North Bridge and Waverley Bridge expected to be retained. Exercise caution and consider dismounting if you can on High Street.
🎪 George Street: Usual annual closure between Hanover St and Frederick St for Fringe venues, with a temporary cycle path. Note that non-permeable barriers are expected to be erected in the cycle path, requiring cycles to go around them.
🎪 Hill Square: Fringe Festival will close Hill Place westbound from 14th July until end Aug but cycle access will be maintained. Be aware of temporary road signage in the contraflow cycle lane westbound and an increase in pedestrians. Nearby Roxburgh Place will also be closed, which may create a pleasant low traffic area.
Longer Term Closures:
🏞️ Water of Leith Path: Closure by Balgreen until late 2025. The great folks at the WOL Conservation Trust have provided 2 diversions, though they may not be signed.
🏗️ London Road: Eastbound cycle lane closed at Jocks Lodge from 1st September until end 2027 for building works.
🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quietroute 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps. It’s been queried whether the cycle path will reopen or remain closed long term.
⚡ Marchmont Road: Closed southbound between Marchmont Cres and Strathearn Rd for Scottish Power works until late September, affecting the old faint on-street cycle lanes. Greenbank – Meadows QuietRoute may offer an alternate route but be aware of works on Whitehouse Loan.
🚂 Waverley Bridge – Issues with cycle access following the road being temporarily re-opened to airport buses. A new temporary arrangement has been installed for the festival period. Officers are looking to install similar long-term arrangements in September.
🌉 Harrison Road: two bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. Access to cycles is being restricted:
- The north-west bridge over a small path is having its deck rebuilt and will be closed to pedestrians and cycles for rebuilding until November. Update 2nd August: Work delayed and paths remain open for now.
- The south-east bridge over the Union Canal has been closed for investigations, with fencing placed across the bridge and a gap for cycles. Update 18th August: Beware of trial pits dug on bridge to ascertain weight-limit ahead of reopening.
🌉 South Gyle Road: Bridge between modal filter and Quiet Route 9 expected to close for repairs until April 2026. When asked about cycle access, a spokesperson for Network Rail Scotland said: "Plans for South Gyle station bridge are still at an early stage, with work expected to begin late summer. We understand the importance of this route for cyclists and are developing proposals for a temporary bridge to maintain access throughout the work. Further details will be shared with the community as planning progresses". It is expected to be required to dismount and use a temporary bridge during the works.
🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present;
