I want to ride my bi/tri/quicycle...
Hello and welcome to Issue 4. We’ve had a lick of paint!
💫 News this Week
🚍 ‘Bike Buses’ are an awesome way for kids to ride to school (in lieu of as yet being able to safely do so, solo) - a fourth George Watson’s route started this week and joins other regular Edinburgh ‘buses’ to James Gillespies and Juniper Green;
🍋 Council Transport Convener Dr. Scott Arthur tweeted (X’d?!) this week that he’d had a ‘positive discussion’ with rental bike scheme provider Lime Bikes about their potential introduction in Edinburgh.
🛣 Road and Route Closures
🚦Temporary lights outside Watson’s on Colinton Rd until 8th Sep (with adjacent works on Myreside Rd into the Autumn / Winter) and Pilrig St from Tuesday 5th for around 5 days;
➡️ Road closures affecting travel this week include:
Major resurfacing works on Regent Rd, Waterloo Pl and Princes St starts today for around 8 weeks; also at Haymarket (see ‘Infrastructure Progress’ below)
Resurfacing at Brandon Terrace in Canonmills;
~Four days of pipe renewal work near the bottom of Viewforth in Bruntsfield starts today;
Out by Millerhill, part of Old Craighall Rd will be closed for around 12 weeks from today for work to do with new housing.
⛏ There’s actually enough new works starting today the Council team put together a special, _riveting_ PDF of them over here - as well as their usual updates.
🌈 Infrastructure Progress
🧰 Improvements to Braidburn Terrace, and its junctions with Midmar Dr / Braid Rd and Comiston Ter, begin today - includes some good snapshots of the new layouts (which I haven’t managed to track down elsewhere);
⚠️ …these are adjacent to the excellent Greenbank-Meadows Quiet Route, on which an important consultation begins tomorrow (so no link yet, unfortunately). The transport convener has blogged about how we got here. If you live in or ever pass through the area by cycle and have a moment, please look over the options being considered and then respond to the consultation when it’s out (link will start working some time on Tuesday).
👷🏼♀️ Progress on the excellent City Centre West-East Link (‘CCWEL’) continues with minor resurfacing works and island alterations at Haymarket station and Haymarket Yards junction for the next fortnight; and from the 18th more substantial resurfacing works running overnight from 7.30pm to 5am until 22nd Sep. Details on this project update;
🔍 Further along the CCWEL community group SW20 highlights this snapshot of the path progress at North St David’s Street coming along;
💈 …and they also point out that the segregated lane bollards are now back on Lanark Rd again 🎉
🏴 At a national level, ‘Transform Scotland’ – Scotland’s alliance for sustainable transport – have published Off Track (PDF), “A review of the Government’s performance on its sustainable transport commitments”.
📆 Events and Happenings
🏨 Associated with promoting the aforementioned CCWEL route, Sat 9th sees a Council pop-up event outside Four Points by Sheraton at Haymarket with free bike safety checks and minor repairs, Police bike security marking and a ‘spot the bike part’ competition around local shops - starting 10am til around 1.30pm.
🎗 Breast cancer awareness event ‘The Moonwalk Scotland’ is on overnight 9th-10th Sep and are still looking for further volunteers to ride Cargo bikes delivering bottled water and support to walkers taking part; contact Ali at Soul Cycles.
🌎 The global ‘Cycle September’ movement is ongoing - register your workplace, track your rides and encourage others to get on their bikes!
