Hey October, meet Autumn

Header Image

Welcome to my monthly newsletter! I'm so happy that you're here.

October 2024

Hi Friends! I can't believe its October already. I celebrated my 37th birthday on September 1st and had an amazing trip to Los Angeles to do bookish and plus size shopping. I got a book at just about every book store we went to. I've got a couple of photos which I'll share at the end of this newsletter and if you want things a little faster you can join me on instagram/threads. I'm @ej_beezington.

I also was able to participate in Flights of Foundry at the end of the month! I had a lot of fun talking about imposter syndrome, writing critique and doing a reading of my own work. I'm trying to push myself to be out in my writing community more and being on panels and even more attending some workshops is part of that.

October promises to be a busy month between day job and trying to make some serious headway on my writing goals for the year.

I finished my novel draft!

Reality TV gif. Contestant from Married At First Sight is ecstatic and dancing in her chair. She sticks her tongue out and air swims, moving both hands happily.

It came in at exactly 82,954 words. A little shy of my 90K goal, but I'm happy with it. Since I finished early I'm writing you this lovely newsletter and working on edits on another short story.

If you're reading this on the first then I've just started a new short story which I'm going to finish by the 15th (don't look at me like that I'm going to write something short. I am. I can do it. Go away) and then after the 15th I'm going to create an outline for the novel I just finished and and edit plan. There are 92 days left in the year today, there are things that need to get done :).

It's also goal setting season. I've bought my planner for next year (I'm a passion planner person) and I'm thinking a lot about what goals I want to set for 2025. I always start this process really early probably because

If you follow me on social media you know I was just on a few panels for Flights of Foundry! I had such a good time. Recordings should be coming out soon so keep an eye on the website! I spoke on the following panels:

  • The Confidence of a Mediocre White Man - How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome
  • So You Want to Start a Writing Critique Circle
  • Author Reading - I read from "A Sin for Freedom" originally published in Beneath Ceaseless Skies

I don't have anything coming up soon! More time to do the work :).

Yield Under Great Persuasion by Alexandra Rowland

This was a shorty and I enjoyed it. I'm learning slowly that enemies to lovers is not generally my vibe (and enemies is a broad term). What I like about this (beyond the sexy bits, you should know me by now) was the exploration of ones own world view and how we can get stuck in a rut based on the fantasy we've created rather than the reality of a situation.

Bang & Burn by Katrina Jackson

I am a HUGE Katrina Jackson fan and have read a lot of her work. This is the 4th book in her "The Spy Who Loved Her" series and its gay :). I love these little suspenseful books which are espionage heavy but still really sexy.

Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia

I've had this book on my TBR for a few years but it hasn't worked out for me to be reading it (the dance of library holds is beautiful and ruthless) but because we were driving to LA I figured this would be a perfect listen. This is a Queer murder mystery with a Black Queer Lead and I really enjoyed it. If Black folks being murdered is hard for you then maybe don't read this but if you can get past that AND you like a period piece then this could be for you.

The Fall Guy (2024) - IMDb

I LOVED this movie. I'm a sucker for an action movie with romantic elements. I also really like Emily Blunt. This is meta on meta and I enjoyed that too. Everyone seems to be having fun and its a great way to unplug for a little bit and have a good laugh.

Agatha All Along (TV Mini Series 2024– ) - IMDb

I've only watched the first two episodes but already I love this show. I like that its stuck to WandaVision's quirky, twisty roots and it's also so witchy and funny. Kathryn Hahn is amazing in this role as are all the other actors. I can't wait to keep watching especially as an MCU girlie.

Jayda Hope does these really awesome recaps of Catfish episodes (and other things but this is what I'm here for). She is a hilarious lovely Canadian with the best laugh! I always love her insights on the catfishes and on the commentary of the hosts.

I used this playlist a lot for my novel draft. Mostly piano music but a wide variety of styles. I can't say much about it except if you're going for a regency vibe, this might help.

I used to really dislike horror movies but my wife kind of loves them. Now I find myself either watching them or listening to the Horror Virgin to determine if I want to watch. Currently there are two hosts, Paige and Todd. Todd hates scary movies but he watches them for the podcasts and gives his real reactions to the movies. It's a lot of fun to listen to and might give you new ideas of things to watch.

I heard this song on Tiktok (where most of my music comes from these days) and it's...stuck in my head. It makes me feel like young Eboni who listened to Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance etc. I also love that they have a black front man.

B-Day Photos!!

Thanks so much for joining me on this ride! I look forward to being together again next month with new updates and other fun things. Stay tuned friends! Bye for now!
