My New Newsletter! And Some Other Stuff
Hey people! As promised, here's my shiny new newsletter! I hope you find it less disappointing than the Mueller Report.
Thank You
The Unrepentant came out 20 days ago, and I'm genuinely touched by the response. From the early positive reviews that came from BOLO Books, Publishers Weekly. Book Riot, Crimespree and more, to the great crowd at One More Page, to Murder and Mayhem in Chicago...it's been wonderful that this book has found a home with so many readers. I really didn't know what the reception would be like, and I'm glad that what I wrote resonated.
(And, if you haven't read it, you might wanna click HERE.)
Launch at One More Page
A shot of the crowd at One More Page. I did a reading with talented D.C. vocalist Ayana Reed! And we'll be working together again...
Murder and Mayhem in Chicago
Shot from the stage at Murder and Mayhem in Chicago! The event was sold out (over 200 in attendance). I was on a panel and moderated one, and the two featured writers were Sophie Hannah and Scott Turow!
One of the features I wanted to add to this newsletter was a quick way to introduce writers you might not know. So...I'm going to invite one writer to tell you about another, and explain why you should read his or her work.
And with that, here's Sarah Chen on why you should read Marietta Miles.
The talent that is Marietta Miles is incomparable. Her prose is haunting, melancholy, and beautiful, whether it’s flash fiction, a short story, or a novella. Read this piece here and tell me you don’t need to immediately read everything she writes: Tell Her.
And click on the images above to learn more about Sarah, Marietta, and their most recent books.
I have an essay in this week's Publishers Weekly, all about how I've been examining, and re-examining, the violence in my work. You can check it out HERE.
(Pretty neat to be in PW! I'm downplaying it, but I'm REALLY FREAKIN' EXCITED.)
Here's a snippet:
In the course of my research, I spoke with a woman who worked with victims of abuse. She offered those victims counseling, a home, and safety. She and I spoke for some time about her work and about the women she helped.
“Why don’t some of the women fight back?” I asked, triggering a pause in the conversation.
“How would they do that?” she asked in response.
I didn’t have an answer. We changed the subject.
Later, I realized she was kinder in her response than she needed to be.
Some other stuff...prior my launch at One More Page Books, I wrote a column for The Independent about how important that little bookstore is to our community, both the DC/MD/VA triangle and crime fiction...for The Thrill Begins, I took part in my favorite feature on that site, "How It Happened," and wrote about my path to publishing...the great crime fiction site, Mystery Playground, does this neat feature called Drinks with Reads, in which a writer discusses what drink pairs best with his book. I wrote about screwdrivers, and how they first got me trashed, and why that works with The Unrepentant...my good friend and fantastic writer Wendy Tyson interviewed me for The Big Thrill about The Unrepentant...and Dan and Kate Malmon, two of crime fiction's best chroniclers, interviewed me for Crimespree Magazine.
And, it's not under writing news, but I did a couple of fun podcasts. I highly recommend checking out The Liar's Club, which is like a morning radio show, but with really smart people. I also had a nice, in-depth talk with the GSMC Book Review and wutg Cyrus Webb over at Conversations Live. Both hosts asked really good, provocative questions, and I entirely DID NOT expect that. And I talked with fellow writer Frank Zafiro on his great podcast, Wrong Place, Write Crime.
And, hey, last but not least, I didn't forget CONTEST TIME! This month's winner of a $25 Amazon gift card is...
