1455 Summer Literary Festival
I was supposed to take part in this event and had to withdraw because of my dumb ankle, but it starts tomorrow, runs this weekend, and sounds fantastic! I wrote about it in today's Washington Independent Review of Books and interviewed the festival's founder, Sean Murphy. Check it out HERE. And, if you're in the DC/MD/VA area, I definitely recommend checking it out!
Since this is kind of a last-minute newsletter, I'm doing something different with the "Two Writers You Should Read" section. I'm giving you my recommendations, based on a book I just finished and one I'm currently reading. Neither is out yet (I was lucky enough to get advance copies), but should definitely pre-order both.
Vanessa Lillie's Little Voices is a debut, and a powerful one. Devon Burges gives birth the same day that a close friend of hers is killed. Troubled by post-partum depression and severe doubt, which comes to life in the form of a cruel voice in her head, Devon is nonetheless determined to find out who killed her friend. Lillie's debut is taut and assured, and the ending is guaranteed to surprise you.
Alex Segura's Pete Fernandez series has been lovingly received, and it's a bit disconcerting to realize that the series will end with Miami Midnight. I've read several in the series (planning to read them all soon) and each book is deeply compelling as it follows Segura's damaged protagonist. I'm in the middle of Miami Midnight and it's such a great farewell to a beloved character. Definitely recommended.

Oh crap! The contest! I always forget.
