Volunteers Newsletter 2

Holiday Greetings from the Glasgow Eastercon Volunteers Team!

It’s been a while since we chatted, hasn’t it? Don’t fear, we have been busy! We’ve been cooking up some  opportunities to get involved and to have some fun.

Volunteer Interest Form

Have you filled out our volunteer interest form? It’s just a short form we set up so you can give us info about when you’re available and what you’d like to do. If you haven’t filled it out yet, it can be found right here.

Introducing Lesley, Our Volunteer Coordinator

We’d like to introduce you to Lesley Scott, our new Volunteer Coordinator. Lesley will be our first point of contact going forward, so you’ll hear from her if you contact us about any of our new roles.

Are You On Our Discord Yet?

Hey, we have a Discord server! You can join here if you just want to chat and get to know the Glasgow Eastercon team, or get more involved in the convention. You can join it here.

Christmas Volunteer Social: Tuesday, 23rd December at 7PM (GMT)

Everyone is invited to our online Christmas party on the 23rd at 7pm 🎄 It’ll be on our Discord server (linked above if you’ve not joined already), and folks can have a chance to chat outside of meetings, and we’ll have some games going (Jackbox, netgames .io + more)  🥳. Even if you don’t have a formal role yet, feel free to come, meet people and play games!

Open Roles Right Now!

We’re starting to get ready with some pre-con roles. If any of them sound good to you, shoot us an email at volunteers@easterconglasgow.org

Do you love writing? We’re looking for people to create social media posts and produce and edit copy for other purposes . These roles will take no more than about an hour a week leading up to the convention. You’ll be creating content from subjects/outlines, writing alt-text/image descriptions, and scheduling social media posts, among other tasks.

Discord maven? We’re also looking for folks to moderate/admin our Discord server, pre-con and leading up to the convention. The role involves managing the Discord server, assigning roles, creating channels, and monitoring server safety and security. You’ll need some prior experience for this role.

Is graphic design your passion? Our Publications team is looking for a Publications Designer. You’ll be taking on the task of designing a template for our Progress Reports and programme book. This role is purely pre-con, so it’ll leave your days at-con free!

More of an ideas person, perhaps? Our Kids/YA Programme needs you for their ideas team! If you’re enthusiastic about YA and kid lit, have some experience of YA/Kids panels, and have a little time to help the team create ideas, we’d love to hear from you.

A Glasgow local who knows the town? Our Member Services team is looking for an Information lead, who will begin collating information and producing content for our members in the run-up to the convention, including an area guide, venue guide, and restaurant guide. This role can be pre-con or can transition into an at-con role. A Glasgow local would be ideal here.

Upcoming - The Eastercon 2027 Book Club!

Starting in April (right after Iridescence), we’re going to be starting a monthly online book club. We’ll be streaming chats about recent and classic works from our Guests of Honour and others. Want to get involved? Signups are here!

By The Way, Iridescence Is Coming Up!

If you’re looking for something a little more immediate to do, our friends at Iridescence will be looking for help! Shoot them an email if you’re interested: chair@eastercon2026.org

What We’re Reading

Ila is reading The Family Experiment, by John Marrs.

Set in a world where most of society are living paycheque to paycheque and can barely afford to cover their own bills, very few are able to afford to start a family. The Family Experiment is a new reality tv show, with 12 contestants given the opportunity to raise one of the newly launched MetaChildren, their very own virtual AI child. Over the span of 9 months, their child will grow from a newborn to an 18 year old, with every second of their and their parent’s lives broadcast live for the world to watch, judge and vote. By the end of the 9 months one lucky couple will win, choosing to either keep their MetaChild or win the money needed to start a real family of their own. For those not so lucky to win, their child will be permanently terminated.

The Family Experiment by John Marrs is a near-future dystopian science fiction/horror book set in the UK exploring the ideas of late stage capitalism and the impact of AI. It is told from the point of views of the different contestants; they are all different ages, races, gender, sexualities, and class, but the one thing they have in common is that they all have something to hide.

Kate is reading Good Spirits by B.K. Borison.

Harriet York, lifelong people-pleaser, is an antique shop owner whose worst sin is standing up for herself. So what has she done to deserve a haunting by Nolan, one of many Ghosts of Christmas Past? Then again, maybe Nolan’s not there to save Harriet - maybe this haunting is about him. A funny, heartfelt and challenging Christmas Carol retelling, which is short enough to read before Christmas.

What We’re Watching

Alan and David are watching Pluribus.

An alien virus has altered humanity into a relentlessly cheerful hive mind. Except a few, such as Carol. Carol doesn’t want to join them. Humanity wants Carol to be happy. Carol’s not happy about that...

That’s all for now! If you’ve got any questions, suggestions, or anything else you’d like us to know, please shoot us an email at volunteers@easterconglasgow.org
