Chairs' Message

It's just over seven months until Unconfined, now! David and I took a short break to go totality-spotting this month and weren't disappointed: no camera image can do it justice. If you're thinking of a holiday next year there is an excellent total eclipse on the 2^nd August or, if you're thinking of going to the 2028 Worldcon in Brisbane there is a total eclipse in Australia five days before the start of the convention.

The Glasgow Meetup

We had a great turnout at the recent Glasgow meetup. It was great to reconnect with some people that we had not seen since the Worldcon in Glasgow.

We’re definitely going to have another one at least — and we hope to see you there too!

Hotel Booking Timetable

We aim to open our hotel block for booking by members very soon after our next newsletter — mid—September.

Bookings will be via two links available within our member registration portal: one for the Crowne Plaza, and one for other hotels nearby.

We will let you know of the date and time of the opening of the hotel block in the next newsletter, on our web site, and via social media.

As previously mentioned, the bookings will not include the Glasgow Visitor’s Levy that will be in place by the time of the convention. This is a sum of 5% of the accommodation cost of your booking and will be collected by your chosen hotel.

Access Fund Information and Timetable

We have previously noted that Unconfined has an Access Fund, created by the generous donations from members and from funds from previous conventions.

Our current plan is to provide at least ten grants, consisting of a discounted adult membership and a sum of £300 to defray costs of attendance in whatever way the recipient chooses. (If a recipient already has a membership, then this will be refunded.)

We expect to open a grant request form around the time of the next newsletter. We will send out details in our newsletter, on our website and via social media.

Further donations to increase the number of grants we can give are always most welcome. Please contribute if you can. Thank you for any sum you can give.

Things to see while you are in Glasgow

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum celebrates Glasgow (both past and present), with other galleries covering Egyptology, animals, and fine art. It is a 25 minute walk from the Crowne Plaza, and entry is free. It is stop 21 on the Glasgow Sightseeing Bus (the Crowne Plaza is close to stops 17 & 18).

The Riverside Museum

The Riverside Museum covers technology and transport; entry is free, and it is also a 25-minute walk from the Crowne Plaza (passing the Clydesdale Distillery en-route). It is stop 19 on the Glasgow Sightseeing Bus.

The Glasgow Science Centre

You do have to pay to go to Glasgow Science Centre, it is a 5-minute walk from the Crowne Plaza. It is stop 12 on the Glasgow Sightseeing Bus.

Don’t worry if you run into a Police Box. It probably isn’t the TARDIS!

Promote Unconfined Near You!

There is one easy thing you could help us with in order to promote Unconfined as widely as possible — give leaflets and posters out near you.

Is there a bookshop, or a library, or a games store or something similar, that would be willing to display a poster or a stack of leaflets? Would you be willing to drop them off there? Please let us know and we will send some out to you.

Newsletter Admin

When you join Unconfined, you choose to have sent to you all communications or essential updates only. We are proposing to send out each Progress Report (maximum of four before the convention) plus final details to all members. All other newsletters — around one a month — will be sent to those who have chosen to receive all communications.

If you are a member of the convention and wish to change how often you receive mail from us, please log into the registration system and update your choice.
