Dynamic Abstractions Reading Group Year-in-Review and January Session
Hi everyone,
This year marked the launch of our Dynamic Abstractions monthly reading group series, and we want to thank everyone who has joined along the way. We are grateful for the time, energy, and engagement from this community, and especially for our speakers who led thoughtful and generative discussions that helped shape the direction of this initiative.
We kicked off the reading groups in February with Damien Masson on Dynamic UI. Since then, we have had a great lineup of speakers and topics, including Sangho Suh on the Ladder of Abstraction, Andy Matuschak on Simulations and Understanding, Ian Arawjo on The Creation, Evolution, and Formalization of New Notational Systems, and Jasmine Otto on Intelligent Interfaces are Boundary Objects. If you would like to revisit past sessions, materials, or recordings, you can find them on our reading group page here:

Unfortunately, we were not able to run the reading groups in the last two months due to last-minute scheduling issues from the speakers. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
We are happy to share that we will resume the reading group in January. Our next session will be led by Joel Chan (University of Maryland), who will guide a discussion on argumentation as a (semi)formalism and incremental formalization.
🗓 Planned Date: January 23
⏰ Time: 12 pm EST / 9 am PST
We will send out another email in January with more details, including the abstract, required reading(s), and the Zoom link.
We are also looking for someone to help us with social media engagement for the Dynamic Abstractions community. In particular, we are interested in experimenting with ways to make ideas from the reading groups more accessible, such as creating short clips from sessions, highlighting key concepts, and sharing takeaways more broadly. If this sounds interesting to you, please fill out this short Google Form:

Thanks again for being part of the Dynamic Abstractions community. We hope you will be able to join us in January, and we wish everyone a great rest of the year!
Best regards,
Sangho
