🔥 THIS WEDNESDAY: Building distributed tech is not enough--how do we distribute the benefits?
How can we distribute the benefits of the tech we build?
"If Amazon employees owned the same proportion of their employer’s stock as Sears workers did in the 1950s–a quarter of the company–each would, by 2020, own shares worth nearly $400,000." --From Fulfillment by Alec MacGillis
In his powerful essay "Distribute Commons, No Commodities," cooperative enterprise expert, Nathan Schneider, suggests a new way forward. Instead of creating another top-1% who hold increasingly concentrated power, what if start-ups committed to distributing value to the community who contributes to it? Schneider calls this an "Exit to Community," and he presents real-world scenarios where distributed benefits are working. This Wednesday, at the June DWeb Meetup, come be challenged by Nathan Schneider & other DWeb project leaders who are building new paths in governance, business models & technology. As Schneider writes, "The web won’t be truly distributed until the wealth it creates is." "For too long, we have hoped that distributed technology would produce distributed power. Again and again, the tech alone doesn’t cut it. The web won’t be truly distributed until the wealth it creates is."
