Our featured speaker at the June DWeb Meetup was Nathan Schneider (above), an author, professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Director of the Media Enterprise Design Lab. He is a leading scholar of cooperative enterprises and has analyzed how projects could put the second DWeb Principle of Distributed Benefits into practice.
We also heard lightning talks from:
- Guo Liu, Co-Founder and CTO of Matters

Come Hang Out at a Protocols Party
Some friends of ours are hosting an in-person "Protocols Party," at our San Francisco Internet Archive Headquarters on Monday, July 19 at 6 PM.
DWeb and DAO folks are invited to an informal mixer at the Internet Archive, 300 Funston Avenue in SF, for social hour and unconference style small group discussions. After we chat for a bit we'll break into focus groups if people are interested in tackling any specifics together, now that we can get together in person!
Who wouldn't want to eat, drink, and talk about identity interoperability?

DWeb Camp Postponed until 2022
In the spring of 2020, we held out hope that we could try to hold a DWeb Camp by the Fall. We thought: what if it were a smaller event, that was local and held entirely outside? But along with nearly all large gatherings last year, DWeb Camp 2020 was cancelled.
What about 2021? At every virtual DWeb Meetups, community members ask us if we plan to hold DWeb Camp in 2021? We’ve been noncommittal while COVID’s threat here in the US remained unclear, and the Delta variant continues to ravage more communities around the world.
Due to the uncertainty of this pandemic, as well as other factors, we have decided to officially postpone our next DWeb Camp until 2022. We thank everyone in our community — our volunteers, DWeb Nodes, and everyone else who are the heart of this movement for continuing to engage with us and each other, and for doing the important work of building better, more resilient decentralized webs.
We miss seeing you and hope we can meet again in person next year!
Note: We will not be holding a DWeb Meetup in July and August. Stay tuned for an announcement about our next virtual meetup in September!
Farewell to Mai Ishikawa Sutton
Since April 2019, Mai Ishikiawa Sutton has been helping to guide the DWeb community as an Associate Producer and Lead Organizer of DWeb Projects. Mai's been instrumental in creating the 2019 DWeb Camp, building mesh networks, and with John Ryan, they led the establishment of the DWeb Principles. Alas, what will we do without them?
This summer, Mai will be leaving their role to head off to do research at the University of Hokkaido in Social and Historical Economics.
Mai, we wish you the best of everything in Japan & hope to see you at the 2022 DWeb Camp! Maybe you can start our Sapporo Node?
