RSVP for April's events

Hi ,

To help you recover from the totally legitimate news that DrupalNYC is becoming DrupalNJ, we invite you to RSVP for our upcoming events, which are part of DrupalFest 2021:

April 7 evening meetup

April 20 lunch & learn

April 7th's talks

Lightning talks

Come prepared (or unprepared!) to give a short talk (max. 10 minutes) on a topic of your choice! Optionally email speak@drupalnyc.org with a title for your talk so we can promote it in advance.

Add a robust events system to your Drupal site in minutes

by Martin Anderson-Clutz

Managing dates and times can be complex: with timezones, daylight savings time, leap years, and even regional formatting differences, there's a lot to manage. On top of all that, the editors on your site are familiar with feature-rich calendar software from the likes of Google, Apple, and Microsoft, and will expect your site to follow their conventions.

This talk will focus on how the use of Smart Date, and its companion module Smart Date Calendar Kit, will give your site a robust events system, quickly and with minimal effort. The provided install includes intuitive, drag-and-drop management of events, and is fully extensible, so you can build on it to meet the specific needs of your site. Even better, adding recurring dates support is only two clicks extra!

We'll start with a stock Drupal 9 install, and you'll see the installation in real time, with a variety of features demoed.

Bio

Martin started his Drupal journey in 2005, with version 4.6. He has been with Digital Echidna since 2015, where he currently goes by the moniker of Senior Consultant, Solutions Architect. He also maintains a number of contrib modules, including Smart Date, Search Overrides, and a few others.

April 20th's talks

IP Ranger "The IP Friendly Network Detection Module" (lightning talk)

by Darryle Steplight

You have a batch of known IP addresses associated with your product. You want to know if a given site visitor is logged on or off your network so you can apply other needed business logic. This module is IPv4/6 friendly and has support for CIDRs. It will update your session data on each page load so you know if a user is out-of-network.

Bio

Darryle is an open-source advocate that is certified in managing Agile Teams. He loves product roadmaps, organizing product backlogs, honest retrospective meetings and is looking forward to launching some mobile products which are currently in development.

Automated testing for Drupal

by David Jeyachandran

Do you feel like Automated Tests are complicated and not worth the effort? What if there was a simple way to set-up automated tests that didn't take days? What if there was a way you could test forms and other critical functionality in your Drupal site without much pain?

David will demonstrate setting up an automated test using end-to-end tests using a tool called Puppeteer. It's easy to install and set-up a test that, for example, opens a page, enters values in fields and then submit a form. It's a useful tool to have in your arsenal and could help make your sites more robust.

Bio

David is a software engineer from Australia. He worked for PwC and then at an Australian bank where he first learned the power of Drupal. Currently he lives with his wife and three kids in a beautiful city nestled in the Andes mountains of Perú. One of his passions is building sites that open rapidly, even with poor bandwidth and on old devices. He loves code, cycling and coffee but not necessarily in that order.

Joining the video conference

We will send Zoom meeting details on or before the day of the event to the email address you provide when you RSVP. If you need help joining the event, please find support on DrupalNYC Slack.
