Dover Shores News - Tsunami Advisory

Tsunami Advisory

A tsunami advisory has been issued in our area due to a major earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia.

To quote the weather service:

Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected or is already occurring. Areas in the advisory should not expect widespread inundation. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.

According to the weather service the expected arrival time in Newport is 1:10AM on Wednesday. Note that this roughly corresponds with the next high tide which is expected at 12:52AM. Our understanding of this event is that we should not expect significant wave action but there may be strong currents in the bay that might damage docks and boats. Owners should take appropriate precautions.

Nobody should be in the water at this time and you should stay out of the water and off the beaches until an all-clear has been issued.

Please note that there may be a series of waves over a span of hours and the first one may not be the largest.

Everyone should subscribe to Newport Notified from the NBPD and AlertOC from the county to receive the latest alerts.
