Dover Shores News - October

Dover Shores News, October 1, 2026

After what seemed like a very brief but very hot summer, fall is here once again. We are now looking at Halloween in the very near future – and going back to standard time on November 1. Here is the latest update from the Dover Shores HOA Board about what is going on in our community:

HIGH PRIORITY! PLEASE VOTE AND RETURN YOUR BALLOT

Several days ago, all Dover Shores owners were mailed ballots with 4 candidate statements for 3 open HOA Board seats. This year the 4 candidates are: Gwen Feiner, James Gula, Emily Leach, and Larry Teal. Each year it seems we have trouble reaching a quorum as unfortunately, many homeowners do not return their ballots. Please remember - this is your community. The Board members are all volunteers who spend a lot of their free time making Dover Shores a community we are all happy to be part of. The Board cannot continue to do that unless they are elected by residents returning their ballots. So, please vote and return your ballots on or before noon, October 20, 2026. If you misplaced your ballot, or no longer have it, please contact BHE for another ballot: Lisa Parra at [email protected] or Melissa Mora at [email protected] THANK YOU.

ANNUAL MEETING – October 20, 2026

The ballots will be counted and winners announced at the Dover Shores Community Association Annual Election and Meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2022, 6:00 p.m., at the Bluewater Grill, 630 Lido Park Dr., Newport Beach, CA. 92663. All Dover Shores homeowners are welcome to attend. Dinner is provided, with no-host bar, and valet parking not included.

DOVER SHORES HOA GENERAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 15, 2026

The Dover Shores bi-monthly HOA meeting was held September 26, 2026, again via Zoom. Here is a brief overview of the main discussions and actions taken.

  • During our Homeowners Forum, HOA President, Emily Leach, thanked homeowners for attending the September 10 informational meeting on individual dock dredging. She explained that after the meeting she and other Board members researched from several sources what took place 15 years ago when the channels of Dover Shores were last dredged. Based on that information, it appeared that when the channel was dredged, those homeowners who wanted their docks to be dredged at the same time were given an opportunity to do so, and it was covered as part of the overall HOA dredging project. This is the only precedent we have.
  • Based on the survey from 2023, our association channels would not require dredging for some time. Depths will be tested again next year and as often as necessary until it is determined they need to be dredged. Emily requested a volunteer from each of the finger streets who could help coordinate with their neighbors which docks would like to be dredged at such time as the channel is dredged. A sub-committee could be formed.
  • Beach News – Larry’s Beach has a NEW BARBECUE! After constant repairs to the old barbecue, a decision was made by the beach committee to replace it with a new one. All residents are encouraged to use it!
  • The Board voted to open an Instagram account for our HOA at the suggestion of board member Rob Brauchli. This will serve as another means of communication, in addition to the newsletter. The account will post HOA meeting reminders, local updates, beach reservations, and other items of interest. You can get connected by following ‘dovershoreshoa’ on Instagram or click here.

BEACH PROBLEM – HELP NEEDED

One of our many beach amenities is the tether ball and pole at Larry’s Beach. A few times each year the ball disappears and we need to replace it and sometimes the rope too. This is not just about the cost of the ball – it’s also the cost of the handyman, and it becomes quite expensive when it happens several times, and of course, this cost is paid from HOA dues. Whether the damage is accidental from kids thinking it’s a good idea to jump on the ball and swing or whether it’s intentional, we need your help to do what you can to prevent this problem if you see misuse happening. As the tether ball was just replaced in July and is gone already only a few weeks later, it will not be replaced during the winter. But when you see it back, please help us out so we can try to prevent it from happening so often.

Thank you.

CERT and Neighborhood Watch

To reduce liability exposure to our Association, this organization has been formally disconnected as Association Committee and reorganized as a private club with purely voluntary participation. Contact Jim Gula if you would like to join our club.

El Nino

The Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service has increased the probability of a very strong El Nino to 90% with a 75% chance of reaching historic levels. The effect of El Nino on our weather is not consistently predictable but the odds favor abnormally high rainfall. The time to prepare is now.

CERT Classes

Fall classes for the award-winning Newport Beach CERT training program begin October 13. Sign up for classes here.
