DOVER SHORES NEWS - JULY
DOVER SHORES NEWS, July 1, 2021
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!! WE WISH ALL OF OUR DOVER SHORES NEIGHBORS A WONDERFUL SAFE CELEBRATION THIS INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH YOUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS!
Here is the latest update from the Dover Shores HOA Board about what is going on in our community:
A MESSAGE FROM SHERRY BILBEISI, HOA PRESIDENT:
In case you are wondering how much life is back to normal, here are some great ways to celebrate July 4th in Newport Beach again this year – straight from the City of Newport Beach website:
- Independence Day Parade & Celebration – Our July 4 Neighborhood Parade and Picnic are back!
The city and the Mariners Elementary School Foundation will host the annual Parade and Celebration on
July 4 at Mariners Park.
The parade will begin at the corner of Commodore and Mariners Drive at 10:30 a.m.,
and the celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the park.
There will be food for sale and wristbands available for purchase that allow participation in fun games and activities. Wristbands are $15 each and can be purchased in advance or at the event. For more information visit the Mariners’ Foundation website at marinersfoundation.com or call the city’s Recreation and Senior Services Department at 949-644-3151.
- Fireworks –
Those of us lucky enough to live in Dover Shores know we have a front row seat to see the Fireworks
Extravaganza at Newport
Dunes Waterfront Resort, which will begin at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 4. Many of us can view the
fireworks from our backyards,
or also from Galaxy Park, or from our community beaches. If you would like to see it at the Dunes,
however, Newport Beach residents
can walk into the evening fireworks show for free with photo ID.
(A reminder from the city that fireworks possession and use are illegal in the City of Newport Beach.)
- Other July 4 City Activities –
Old Glory Boat Parade – The Annual “Old Glory Boat Parade” will be held in Newport Harbor on July 4 at 1:00 p.m. See boats decorated in red, white and blue move through the harbor. For more information, including best viewing locations, please contact the American Legion Yacht Club at 949-673-5002.
Fourth of July Flyover – The Condor Squadron Officer’s and Airmen’s Association, founded by WWII fighter pilots, will fly AT-6’s over Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and San Clemente on July 4. They are expected to fly over Newport Beach between 5:35 p.m. – 5:40 p.m. (so look up quickly).
Newport Peninsula Bike Parade and Community Festival – This decorated bike and dog parade begins at 9:00 a.m. at Balboa Blvd. and 36th Street. It will head down the Balboa Blvd. to Channel Pace Park for a free festival with carnival games, giant slides, jump houses, arts & crafts and food. The festival will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information, please contact the City Recreation Department at 644-3151.
And it’s even a three-day weekend with Monday July 5 being a federal and state holiday. What a great way for summer to begin!
UPDATE ON TUESDAY NIGHT BEACH BARBEQUES:
Our first Summer Barbeque is now scheduled for JULY 13, 6:00 P.M. LARRY’S BEACH. NO BBQ ON JULY 6.
First, as many new families have moved into Dover Shores over the last two years, some may not know how the Tuesday BBQs work. They are free to homeowners. No reservations are needed. Sign-in is required for residents, and while guests are permitted for a $10 fee, they are not encouraged as sometimes the BBQs are very well attended with residents. They start at 6:00 at Larry’s Beach and are generally over around 7:30 or before dark. They're paid for with our HOA dues. Each week a Dover Shores family or a few families working together host the BBQ by providing the dinner and are reimbursed up to $700 towards their food expenses. The HOA provides bottled water, iced tea, and lemonade. And best of all, this is a great way to meet your neighbors!
Last month the Board was happy to announce we were restarting our much-missed Tuesday Night BBQs. Tate Luesebrink has very generously volunteered his time to be Social Chair to organize and coordinate the event. However, we need volunteers to be host families on each Tuesday night, and ask that anyone interested in hosting to please respond to this newsletter (email board@dovershoreshoa.org) if they can help out one week.
Unfortunately we do not have any volunteers to host, except for Tate who will host the BBQ on July 13. The Board will also host one of the BBQs. We need other families to sign up, hopefully at the first BBQ on the 13th. At that time we will also be seeing from the number of neighbors attending just how much interest there still is in continuing this event. In the meantime, to help us plan ahead, it would be a great help if anyone is interested in hosting, please let us know before July 13 by responding to this newsletter. The Tuesday night BBQs are a wonderful Dover Shores tradition, and we would love to keep them going.
SAY HELLO TO OUR BEACH ATTENDANTS!
Ty can be found at the beach Saturdays and Sundays between 11 am and 6 pm. Ty is looking forward to his senior year at Sage Hill High School. He is on the water polo and sailing teams at Sage, and also lifeguards at the JCC (Jewish Community Center). He reports that our Dover Shores community is increasingly enjoying the beach, including parties, gatherings, and casual get-togethers as the weather gets warmer and the sand and salt air beckon!
Scott mans the beach on Monday through Friday 11 – 6. He is a semi-retired teacher and counselor who loves the water and especially loves people. He knows that everyone has a story and enjoys meeting and getting to know beach visitors. During his teaching career he taught many subjects including Biology, Chemistry and English as a Second Language. He takes pride in keeping our Dover Shores beaches clean and tidy for the enjoyment of homeowners and guests.
Thank you Ty and Scott for watching over the beach for us!
NEXT DOVER SHORES HOA MEETING: JULY 20, 2021, 5:00 p.m.
The July board meeting of the Dover Shores Community Association will be conducted via Zoom on Tuesday, July 20. The general session with homeowner participation begins at 5PM.
Join Zoom Meeting with your browser
Meeting ID: 856 3767 6215
Passcode: 596596
Some potential Agenda items include:
- A discussion on the current Fine Schedule for (1) violations of Architectural and Landscape control procedures, and (2) violations of any of the other Governing Documents such as the CC&Rs and Beach Rules and Policies, and whether they should be revised.
- There will also be an update from the Landscape and Architectural Committees on their joint efforts to revise Architectural Control Procedures, so they include review by the Landscape Committee on a much quicker timeline. Going forward, the Landscape Committee will review Landscape Plans as soon as they are received by the Architecture Committee. The goal is to shorten approval periods for new construction and remodels, and to make the process smoother for the homeowner.
- As usual, there will be an update on Beach Improvements and an update on the Beach BBQs.
- The Beach Committee will also discuss trespassers on Fisherman’s Beach and what steps can be taken to avoid this.
A MESSAGE FROM BHE MANAGEMENT CORPORATION:
It’s July – and it’s Jumping!! Have you tried to get a restaurant reservation in Newport Beach recently? Or worse yet – tried to walk in without a reservation with more than 2 people? Things are definitely “Jumping” and July will be no exception as more and more people from out of the area converge on our little beach town.
Let’s remember, too, that while there will be friends and family in the neighborhood, criminals may be here too. Here are a few suggestions for keeping yourself and your neighbors safe!
If you are going out of town:
- Be certain that your newspaper is stopped, and your trash barrels will be put away. Perhaps you can arrange with a neighbor to assist with the barrels? It keeps the neighborhood looking its best and doesn’t “advertise” that you’re out of town!
- Try to resist ordering last-minute items on-line that may be set on your doorstep while you’re away.
- Leave on a light that will shine through any blinds/curtains just enough that it appears someone is home.
- Lock everything while you’re gone – don’t leave open windows or doors!
- Ask a neighbor to check in periodically and be sure your neighbor has your cell phone number so that they can contact you in case of an emergency!
If you are staying home and enjoying yourself here:
- Keep an eye out for unusual movements or people at your neighbors’ homes – and don’t resist the urge to contact the NBPD if you think you see something strange! Call the NBPD non-emergency number: 949-644-3717.
- Be aware of the time if you are entertaining – especially with an outdoor party, where music and voices can carry across yards late at night.
- Consider bringing a trash bag if you go out for a neighborhood stroll…errant debris has a way of looking “trashy”…
Thank you for being a wonderful part of the neighborhood and enjoy the unbeatable weather that July should be bringing!!

CERT – NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH UPDATES:
A Lesson in Crime
On June 12 at 3:42 in the afternoon, the person riding this motorcycle robbed the contents of an unlocked vehicle owned by a visitor to one of our residents at the north end of Galaxy. Stolen credit cards were used fraudulently within a couple of hours of the theft. You can watch the crime take place on captured video:
The entire theft from the time the motorcycle stops until he drives off again took less than a minute. From the video, it's obvious that the robber had previously selected the vehicle, probably by casing the street on foot.
Some lessons:
- Always keep street-accessible vehicles locked and remind any visitors to do the same.
- Never leave valuable items visible inside the car. Even if the car is locked, auto break-ins are common.
- If you see anyone acting suspiciously, don't hesitate to report your concerns to the NBPD non-emergency number 949-646-3717. A citizen report like this gives the police the legal authority to stop and question someone, authority that they do not have in general.
- Though night-time thefts are more common, they can occur at any time, in broad daylight.
Air Quality
The LA basin has long suffered from poor air quality that can be dangerous, particularly to those with underlying medical conditions. As we live close to the coast, our air quality is generally better than most but it can degrade in Santa-Ana conditions, particularly if there is a fire up wind from us.
The same masks that we have been using to protect from COVID can be used to protect from particulates when air quality is bad. As with COVID protection, N95 masks give better protection than surgical or home-made masks.
You can sign up to receive email alerts of poor air quality at the South Coast AQMD. A phone app is also available.
July 4th
The NBPD has posted information about street closures, parking, and the Safety Enhancement Zone on it it's web site here
ONE MORE NOTICE FROM DOVER SHORES COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION:
- Swim at your own risk
- Please supervise and watch children you bring to the beach at all times. They are your responsibility. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Dover Shores assumes no liability for water activities of any beach user.
- Dover Shores is not ensuring anyone’s safety with the presence of a beach attendant.
- PLEASE let’s all continue to be smart, stay safe and be considerate of other beach users and residents.
Finally
Please let your neighbors know how to contact us at board@dovershoreshoa.org if they are not part of our email list and would like to join. Or please forward this email to them. Our goal is to reach every Dover Shores neighbor.
Note that past newsletters are always available at our archives.
