Winning love by daylight
Hey! Newsletter transformation, go!
I never really got into Sailor Moon, but I had a friend in high school who was SUPER into it, and showed me at least one movie, which made zero impact on me. However, I was thinking about it this week and I realized that a Sailor Moon comic was the first comic book I ever bought, aside from Archie digests. I dug through a bin in a shop in the mall, and decided to buy two for some reason. There was kissing. That’s all I remember.
An auspicious beginning to my career reading comics.
I was reflecting on this because my friends’ comic book came out from Dark Horse this week (like, it’s a real comic! Not that there’s anything fake about self-published comics–THERE IS NOT!–but it’s crazy that this comic is a thing that somebody made up and sent us in boxes instead of us having to cut and staple it together ourselves). It’s a magical girl comic, hence the Sailor Moon thoughts. It’s great, and if you hold onto your butts for a sec, I’ll tell ya more.
Notable Breakfast

Oatmeal with apple butter, raisins, and cinnamon. My fave breakfast, and I’m so glad it’s getting cool enough to eat oatmeal outside in the mornings.
Dog Thing

Mixed Media

I saw The Man from U.N.C.L.E. last week, which I liked a lot! So much that I went back this week with a couple of friends who I knew would love it. (The dragging-friends-to-movies thing is something I apparently do so frequently that when I mentioned my plan at work, my coworker said “Oh, you mean you’re going to your other job?” If only it was a job that paid me anything.)

I typically enjoy Guy Ritchie movies, so I figured I would like this one, but was surprised that it didn’t really feel like a Guy Ritchie movie–not in a bad way! Ritchie tends to move at a breakneck pace, and this is much slower than usual for him. It’s still very slick, and extremely stylish, as if he was attempting to fit his own style into the mid-century spy movie model. And it works!

The cast is fantastic. Henry Cavill’s American thief-turned-spy is delightful, Armie Hammer’s repressed KGB agent is honestly the best thing I’ve seen him do, and Alicia Vikander’s snappy German mechanic holds it all together (and more than holds her own next to her two gigantic costars). It’s a great deal of fun and gorgeous as heck (the costumes!). I would not be sad if Cavill quit that whole Superman operation and just made sequels to this movie forever. Not for nothing, the soundtrack, by Daniel Pemberton with excellent period recordings sprinkled through it, is great.
Also: the aforementioned Man from U.N.C.L.E. soundtrack was on repeat for a few days, and then was replaced by Carly Rae Jepson’s new album, which is also great (listen to the 2nd single here).
I Read Comics for a Living

Zodiac Starforce #1 I have been waiting for this issue to hit the shelves for what feels like 100 years. Kevin and Paulina are both friends of mine, so I have been watching the process through which this comic went from webcomic, to mini-comic, through all of the many pitches they sent out, to the thrilling moment when Dark Horse picked it up for the last 2 years. And then of course there was the actual process of getting it from pitch to full-fledged, 4-part comic. But it happened! It happened, and #1 is out and you can read it and it’s great. I cannot pretend to be the least bit unbiased about it, of course, but I’m confident that even if it wasn’t made by my buds I’d still be excited about ZS.

It’s about a group of magical girls who’ve already saved the world once, and at great cost. Since then, they’ve broken up and are trying to get on with their lives as normal teenagers, but now something evil is afoot. It’s as much about holding onto the people you love as it is about fighting baddies.
You’ve got a fantastic, diverse cast of girls who feel like complete individuals in their own rights, and the story feels meaty and real but also like it could believably happen in a high school (Kevin has watched a lot of Buffy. So much Buffy). Paulina’s art is off the chain great, her action scenes flow super well, and her colors are candy bright and delicious. You should check this book out because my friends made it and I want them to have good things, but also because this thing they’ve made is a really good thing.

Also good: Lumberjanes #17, TMNT Casey & April #3, Spider-Woman #10, Star Wars: Lando #3, and the first Effigy trade is out, collecting half of the story.

Fics I Shouted About
flawless by bibliosexualll Teen Wolf, Sterek. An AU where Lydia is a pop star who Stiles is obsesssed with, to the point that Derek’s starting to get a little nervous about it.
the devil finds work for by Fahye The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Illya/Gaby/Napoleon. Gaby cons them all into getting what they want. Loved how this was paced and full of little moments.
Instructions for Dancing by calrissian18 Teen Wolf, Sterek, Everyone-is-magic AU. This is a Sterek fic, but the meat of the story is about Stiles & Scott’s friendship, and it is lovely. The Hales are all alive, a sprawling, deeply magical family. Loved how this one built.
Lastly
A new tiny little bit of Star Wars Episode 7 was released on Instagram yesterday, and I watched it and literally screamed. It’s here, if you want. Plus, Hasbro released their catalog of the new Star Wars toys and it is very exciting.
