this is not a moment it's the movement
Hello, it is me.
Did you have a good Halloween? I hope so! I watched the Halloween episode from the 2nd season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, decorated by draping a sheet over a frog sculpture, and handed candy out to babies.

So spooky!
I also went up to Maryland to visit this year’s Artomatic, which is a biennial art show in the Washington, DC area. The show takes over an entire empty building, and artists are given sections of walls or rooms to display their work. It’s massive, and eclectic, and free! I have a couple friends with work in the show (and after getting there I discovered I knew even more), so it was great to see their pieces displayed. Artomatic runs through December 12th, I highly recommend checking it out!

Mixed Media

A friend of mine commented this week how tired she is of police procedural/mystery shows where someone has some preternatural observational or psychic ability, how she longed to see some of the sludge of actual detective work, and I was reminded of my deep love for British murder mystery tv.

There is a specific genre of British detective show that plays on PBS stations, and with which with my mother has been obsessed for my entire life. They’re calmer than American crime tv, deaths are just as violent, but more often than not left off-screen, and never will you see forensic science being done to the tune of the latest hit electronica song (I say this with a certain amount of affection; I watched three variations of CSI). As I told my friend, generally at least once an episode, someone will shift a gigantic pile of notes and huff in frustration. Due to genetics or indoctrination, I have shared my mom’s fondness for British mysteries for as long as I can remember. I watch a lot of them to this day, but the one I love best is Lewis.

Lewis (called Inspector Lewis on American channels) spun off of Inspector Morse, which ran for 13 years. In it, Robbie Lewis was the erudite Morse’s more blue-collar partner, a distinction which came up a lot, as the series took place in Oxford, England, and often involved academics. Lewis is much the same, although now Robbie is the senior, and highly educated Hathaway is his partner.

Lest you think it’s all white dudes all the time (have we met?), I can assure you there are some fantastic ladies in the core cast, and there’s a great diversity of characters in each episode.

I love the look and pace of it, as well as the supportive family feeling between the whole cast. It’s in its final season now, which I’m trying not to think about. I’m going to miss this crew.
Also: I’m still deep into Hamilton. It’s still great, FYI! I have officially taken to volunteering to drive friends places so I can force them to listen to it in my car. I replayed the Nancy Drew game Ghost of Thornton Hall, in the dark, and was sufficiently spooked. I saw Spectre! It is definitely a James Bond movie. Started 3 books, have finished none. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I Read Comics for a Living

I am a person who loves genre fiction, but I’ve always gone more for sci-fi than fantasy, particular complex LoTR-esque high fantasy. So it was something of a surprise that I went so hard for Monstress #1, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. Although, maybe not so surprising–Liu was one of my favourite writers back in the height of my romance-reading days. Monstress plunges you into an incredible, fully-formed, world, and spins out a story of war and revenge that I am dying to know more about.
Also good:
Paper Girls #2 This issue does not beat around the bush, but plunges right into the big mystery of the series. My love for the girls has grown exponentially.
Ufology #6 The final issue! Some mysteries are solved, others are…not. I really enjoyed this little series about teens and aliens. It felt kind of like an X-Files episode where Mulder and Scully never showed, so the kids dealt with it themselves.
Wild’s End Enemy Within #2 Another alien invasion comic, this one more of the War of the Worlds variety, only all of the people are animals. Literally.

Fics I Shouted About
Nine Lifetimes by otter Captain America, Steve/Bucky, AU. This isn’t a fandom or ship I read much of, but I’m glad I read this, because it is the best. Bucky is trying and failing to get used to life as a civilian when suddenly he finds he has a cat.
Room To Breathe by elisera Teen Wolf, Derek/Braeden, future AU. This is an incredibly sweet little family life fic.
In Which There Are Stories to Be Told by MadMadamM Teen Wolf, Sterek. I could honestly fill this list with nothing but sterek fics because there were so many posted last week, but this one really caught me. I wanted much more of it.
In Which a King and a Mage Meet by MadMadamM Teen Wolf, Sterek, fantasy AU. Ok, I lied, this one caught me, too. You really can’t go wrong with M’s writing.
Lastly
I loved this article in the New Yorker about Merlin Tuttle, a man who has devoted his life to saving and educating humans about bats. “Tuttle comes across as a conservationist and scientist first, a combination of Indiana Jones and Mark Trail second. The book is an adventure tale whose reward is always bats.”

That’s all from me!
