is this a big ol' robot?
hey hey
It finally feels like we’ve reached the end of this eternal summer. It’s been cool, rainy, and misty for the last 3 days, so of course I am THRILLED. Crisp, misty autumn is the season of my heart.
The Small Press Expo has come and gone, which always signals the beginning of fall to me. I had a grand time, and as always came home wishing I could have bought everything. SPX is the best antidote to industry fatigue for me, there are so many people doing great things. Here was my haul:

I went out last weekend with two ladies who I only know because of the internet, and whenever I spend IRL time with friends cultivated on the internet, I get very weepy about the whole subject. I think about the random confluence of events which had to occur in order for us all to find each other, time zones be damned. How lucky we are to be alive right now, etc. So it felt natural when a few days later, Mallory Ortberg posted her tribute to making friends on the internet.

Notable Breakfast

I started with a lot more grits, I promise you.
Dog Thing

All legs and fluff.

I fell in love with the work of Edward Gorey before I knew what was happening, every time my mom tuned into PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery! (which was very, very often).

I remember discovering that there was more Gorey and feeling like I had decades and decades of time to make up for. I bought the little books, I bought the Amphigoreys, I bought the book about his home, I ventured to Columbia University to see an exhibit about him, where I took 1,000 photos and would have happily stolen everything if given the chance.

He produced a truly astonishing amount in his life, using a number of pseudonyms, was asexual, and I love love love his weird, daintily macabre work.

His most famous work, aside from the Mystery! intro, is probably the Gashlycrumb Tinies, and if you’ve never read anything Gorey, I’d start there.

If you’re anything like me, it will put you right in the mood for fall.
Also:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is back and everything is okay again! How I’ve missed it. I’ve been watching the new show The Good Place, and really enjoying it!

I read Saving Montgomery Sole by Mariko Tamaki, which is about a girl who is very interested in supernatural unknowns, to the point that she puts her faith in them when she can’t handle the real world. It was really good! Tom Gauld’s new book, Mooncop, is excellent, and delivers the wry, smart, bittersweet stuff he’s so good at.

I’ve been listening to Against Me!’s new album Shape Shift With Me as much as possible, I love it. Favourite track is “Crash.” Hayley Kiyoko’s new EP Citrine is out today, and it’s as good as the single “Gravel to Tempo” promised. All 5 songs are on her Youtube. I’ve been using the Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack to drown out the sound of nextdoor construction at work, and it remains my favourite movie score.

I saw Queen of Katwe just today, and loved it. Every single performance in it is great, and Mira Nair’s direction is wonderful. I had tears in my eyes–from both joy and sadness–pretty much the entire film. I continued my accidental rewatch of Studio Ghibli movies with Kiki’s Delivery Service, which is as delightful as you remember it being. I watched Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, which I’m only telling you so I have an excuse to show you this gif:

Fics I Shouted About
coming home by grimm Teen Wolf, Scott/Lydia, future fic. I revisited this favourite of mine, which features Lydia coming back to Beacon Hills for her mom’s wedding, and seeing her old friends with new eyes. It’s my all-time favourite Scott & Lydia fic.
Let the Water Lead Us Home by LynnLarch Voltron, Keith/Lance. Homesick, Lance tries to use the broken simulation device and instead ends up trapped inside of it.
untitled by notbecauseofvictories Star Wars, Han/Leia. I love this little fic about Leia facing political criticism because of her choice of scoundrel husband for the glimpse it gives us into what Han and Leia’s lives might have looked like, in the early years of their marriage.
Shadowplay by Nokomis Stranger Things, Eleven. Eleven watches her friends from the Upside Down.
i close my eyes until i see (i don’t need hands to touch me) by notcaycepollard Captain America Civil War, Sam/Bucky. It’s a testament to notcaycepollard’s skill as a writer that this utterly ridiculous fic in which Bucky gets turned into a tentacle monster because asgard magic is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever read.
got got got it bad by kairiolette Voltron, Keith/Lance, future fic. Keith realizes he has a crush, and is completely dramatic about it. Lance realizes Keith has a crush, thinks the drama is a LITTLE much, but gets to thinking about what it all means.
The Brawny Man’s Emo Cousin by troubleiwant Teen Wolf, Sterek, future au. I love outside pov fics, and this is a great one. Stiles’ friend Amanda hears all about his sweet, nerdy boyfriend Derek, and she feels offended on his behalf when Stiles starts sleeping with some tough-looking stranger.
Lastly
GQ published a super sexist piece about climbers, and Outdoor Research skewered it by recreating it in its entirety with everyone’s genders flipped
Postcard from the Past, which posts scans of old postcards alongside a single line from the message that was written on them, is my new fave twitter
Ghostbusters is now out digitally, and we’re drowning in a cornucopia of deleted scenes, including this incredible dance sequence.
This is me:
