Small Steps Forward

Hello friends,

It’s been a bit of a slow stretch for me creatively, but I finally broke through this past Tuesday and managed to write two new poems. They’re rough and will need shaping, but they’re on paper now, and that is progress.

I haven’t started work yet on the 25th anniversary edition of Broken Images, though I still plan to. Another project has also been forming in my mind — too early to share specifics, but it feels like something special.

For this issue’s spotlight, I’d like to share a poem called One Day Closer. It captures the sense of trudging through a long journey, aware the end may be near but not letting hope rise too high, too soon.

Spotlight Poem: “One Day Closer”

One day closer to home

A long hard journey continues

Early morning — I’m on the road
Carrying myself across slow miles

Late evening — I stop to rest
My feet are sore from walking
My mind is numb from thinking…
Or trying not to think

I lie beside the road
And sleep away the darkness

It is a tired dreamless sleep
This is a blessing

What a huge disappointment it would be
To be home in my dreams
Only to awaken just one day closer.

Thank you for continuing to walk this journey with me.

— Donnie
