Hello!
Let’s cut to the chase: we don’t have a newsletter jam-packed with mini-reviews of submissions from the mailbag this month. It’s the first week of December 2019, and we’re currently up to our elbows working feverishly on our annual Favourite Fifty albums post (which is coming very soon).
Not gonna lie: once we establish our ranked list through a highly scientific, air-tight, peer-reviewed algorithm developed by some of the world’s top quantum physicists, everything else takes a bit of a backseat. We think it’s worth it, though. Every year since we started doing it, the DOMINIONATED Favourite Fifty ends up a refreshing tonic from all the other year-end lists. Tanya Tagaq’s Retribution (2016), Fiver’s Audible Songs From Rockwood (2017), and Jennifer Castle’s Angels of Death (2018) will be joined by another worthy record, alongside forty-nine others that sparked joy and ignited our collective imagination this past year.
But that’s not all!
The end of 2019 also marks the close of a decade that’s seen seismic shifts in the way we create, consume, and converse about music. Yeah, we know it’s a little cliché to join in with all the other decade-long retrospectives, but we’re suckers for making lists. We also love to start conversations. So instead of hiding behind closed doors and making pitches to ourselves about the most influential, memorable Canadian albums of 2010-2019, we’re inviting everyone in the #DOMINIONation to have their say.
Sometime between December 16 and 31, 2019, we’re publishing a Deep Dive list of records released in the last decade that made a lasting mark on our collective conscious. You’re all invited to join the conversation by taking this short survey and telling us about five of those records. You can even write your own mini-review about it that we may end up publishing in our post. The survey’s limited to five albums (for technical reasons we don’t need to get into), but nothing’s stopping you from taking the survey multiple times. In fact, please do. Do it lots. You can’t crowdsource a list without a crowd, so go ahead: flood our inbox with your input.
We promise our DOminiONATED mini-reviews will be back in 2020. It’s been a blast compiling them for you, and we’re excited about new ways to share them.
Thanks for being here. See you in the next decade.
Team DOMINIONATED.
