Denmark Decoded #2 — How to read your Danish payslip
Issue #2
How to read your Danish payslip
Every month you get a lønseddel (payslip) that looks like a cryptic spreadsheet. Understanding it means knowing if you're being paid correctly, how much tax is withheld, and what deductions are taken.
Why this matters
Every month you get a lønseddel (payslip) that looks like a cryptic spreadsheet. Understanding it means knowing if you're being paid correctly, how much tax is withheld, and what deductions are taken.
What you need to know
- Bruttoløn (Gross salary): Your salary before any deductions
- AM-bidrag (Labour market contribution): 8% deducted before tax — everyone pays this
- A-skat (A-tax): Income tax withheld at source — rate depends on your tax card
- ATP (Pension contribution): Small mandatory pension payment (~90 DKK/month)
- Feriemidler (Holiday pay): 12.5% of gross, saved for vacation
Key takeaway: Your net pay is roughly 60-70% of your gross salary after AM-bidrag, A-skat, and pension contributions.
Common mistakes
- Not checking if your tax card (skattekort) is registered with your employer
- Ignoring feriemidler — it's real money you can claim when leaving Denmark
- Not understanding that ATP is mandatory, not optional
