10 cartoons featuring characters with two Dads
There’s a number of cartoons nowadays that feature characters who have two fathers. In time for Father’s Day, as well as LGBTQ Pride Month, here’s a look at 10 comics and animated cartoons featuring characters with two Dads. (For my similar post for Mother’s Day, see here.)
16 Hudson
“16 Hudson,” a Canadian preschool cartoon about the residents of an apartment building in an unnamed city, features Luc, who has two Dads: Paul and Bayani. The latter runs a bakery that seems to be located in or near 16 Hudson.
Bayani is voiced by Dave Dimapilis. Paul is voiced by Colin Murdock.
AJ & Magnus
“AJ & Magnus” is a webcomic about AJ, a rambunctious boy who has two Dads, “Dad” and “Pop,” and a pet dog, Magnus. Early strips bore some similarity to “Calvin and Hobbes”; in this case, AJ is the only character who can talk to his dog. Stories also delve into the lives of Dad and Pop.
Apollo and Midnighter
Apollo and Midnighter are basically “darker and edgier” (read: R-rated) versions of Superman and Batman respectively, with the additional twist that they’re a gay couple. (They also live in the same universe, or at least multiverse, as Superman and Batman.) The two have an adopted daughter, Jenny Quantum.
The Bravest Knight
“The Bravest Knight” is a cartoon that ran for a season on Hulu in 2019. The show features Sir Cedric, a knight, and his husband, Prince Andrew, who’re raising an adopted daughter, Nia. The show features Cedric telling stories to Nia about his own youth as a knight in training, and the life lessons he learned along the way. In that respect, the show feels reminiscent (in a good way) of the 1990s Nelvana “Babar” animated series.
Sir Cedric is voiced by T.R. Knight (as an adult) and Chance Hurstfield (in youth flashbacks). Prince Andrew is voiced by Wilson Cruz.
The Loud House
Popular Nickelodeon series “The Loud House” features the McBride family: Clyde, who’s Lincoln’s best friend, and Clyde’s Dads, Harold and Howard. Clyde’s fathers are very overprotective of Clyde (versus the more freewheeling Loud household); the McBrides’ behavior becomes a plot point for a few episodes.
Harold is voiced by comedian (and “Let’s Make a Deal” host) Wayne Brady. Howard is voiced by Michael McDonald.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
Disney Channel's "Moon Girl" animated series (based on the Marvel comic) is noted for its cast’s diversity. This includes Lunella’s best friend Casey and her two fathers, Isaac and Antonio Goldberg-Calderon. Casey’s fathers make a prominent appearance in the episode “Today, I Am a Woman,” about Casey’s bat mitzvah.
Isaac is voiced by Andy Cohen, while Antonio is voiced by Wilson Cruz (in his second appearance in this post).
The Owl House
Disney Channel’s “The Owl House” is noted for its LGBTQ representation, including for the show’s star, Luz. Willow, one of Luz’s friends in the Boiling Isles, has two fathers, Gilbert and Harvey Park. While they don’t make a ton of appearances, they do love their daughter dearly; they’re also a contrast to the cold nature of Odalia Blight, the mother of Willow’s friend Amity.
Gilbert is voiced by Eric Bauza; Harvey is voiced by Matt Chapman.
The Proud Family (2022 series)
“The Proud Family” originally ran on Disney Channel from 2001 to 2005. A reboot, titled “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” launched on Disney+ in 2022. As part of updating the show for the 2020s, the cast includes Barry and Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins, the fathers of two adopted children (Maya and Francis “KG” Leibowitz-Jenkins).
Barry is voiced by Zachary Quinto, while Randall is voiced by Billy Porter.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
“She-Ra” ran on Netflix for 2018 to 2020. A reboot of the 1980s Filmation series (and “He-Man” spin-off), “She-Ra” is set in the world of Etheria.
Bow, one of the main characters, has two fathers, historians George and Lance. While Bow loves them both, he hid his involved with the Rebellion from them (fearing they wouldn’t like his involvement in such), causing some drama.
George and Lance easily have the most children out of any of the families mentioned in this post: they have 13 kids. (One-upping “The Loud House”’s Loud family and their 11 kids.)
As part of a “She-Ra” lore reference, George looks like a non-white version of Bow’s 1980s series counterpart.
George is voiced by Chris Jai Alex; Lance is voiced by Regi Davis.
Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City
“Berry in the Big City” is a series that launched in 2021, and runs on YouTube plus several streaming services (mainly Netflix and Peacock).
The latest revival in the “Strawberry Shortcake” franchise features a diverse cast. In “Berry in the Big City,” Strawberry’s friend Lime Chiffon has two fathers, Fluffy Chiffon and Dr. Lime Pops. (Yes, everyone’s named after a fruit, baked good, or dessert in this franchise.) Fluffy is a famous fashion designer in Big Apple City, the show’s setting. His husband Lime Pops is a doctor, but in what field is unknown.
Fluffy is voiced by Omari Newton; Lime Pops is voiced by Andrew Toth.
Conclusion
I note other than Apollo and Midnighter, every couple on this list features at least one person of color. So there's positive representation in that aspect, as well.
