I Miss My MTV: Girls Gone Wild (Walking on Broken Glass)

Ladies be horny, am I right? We continue our journey into lusty videos with “Walking on Broken Glass.” (1992)
Annie Lennox, like most of us, watched Dangerous Liaisons and thought, wait, is John Malkovich hot? And concluded that yes, he was, but a lot of it was the period costuming. Let’s recreate that magic, Annie said, and it was done.
This is not your daddy’s Vicomte Sébastien de Valmont. Here, Malkovich not being such a bad character, but perhaps more hesitant. In comparison to Annie’s current paramour, Hugh Laurie. All Hugh wasnts to do is dote on her, but his problem is that he is not the Vicomte.
Here, Annie gets submersive. It’s her video, she can do what she wants—why is not a makeout scene the first on the call sheet? The titilation is the frustration she has at not having him. John is married to some young starlet type, but is quite aware of Annie seething in the background.
This literally drives her crazy. So crazy, in fact she can no longer stop herself from accosting him, grasping him and begging him, to his disgust. He pushes her away, but she will not give up! It’s (my) worst fear: being publicly rejected and being overly emotional about it.
She finally wins him over and he lifts her and twirls her. The motto? Never give up. Had the roles been reversed, this would be suspect. But I admire her for putting herself out there and her sexual desperation. This is like the bootstrapping of sexual desire: if you keep at it, give into the madness, it works.
The period costumes certainly help with the sexual tension. Also, did Annie not have time for a wig? Regardless, she’s never looked better.
