All the things I’ve bought during this year to try to fill the void
This Everlane button-down shirt. I’ve been obsessed with minimal dressing since watching Industry on HBO. The main character wears the same outfit every day, and I wish I was that confident to let my personality shine on its own. Also, for most of my life, I haven’t been able to wear button-downs,.
Did it make me happy? A little bit.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Criterion Blu-Ray. Why do I fall for the Criterion scam all the time? I haven’t even watched it yet because I have to drag my old DVD player and hook it up. I bought it with the intention of writing a journal article about the rewritten narrative from sleazy film to high culture cult. Hasn’t happened yet.
Did it make me happy? No, it taunts me about my failure to take action.
Johnny Was masks. I will never afford their rich divorcee kimonos, but I can have one for my face. Coronavirus is still an opportunity to accessorize.
Did it make me happy? Yes.
Sleeping Bras. Bras….you can sleep in. When I am quarantining, I don’t like any buttons, zippers, clasps, or wires touching my body. Goal achieved.
Did it make me happy? Oh yes.
Caboodles trunk case. Part nostalgia, part need to keep my ASOS accessories untangled. I bought this as a present for finishing my comp exams, and what a sight to behold.
Did it make me happy? Yes. I gaze at it lovingly every time I see it.
Barney Butter snack pack. I love single serving things. I love almond butter. Perfect for a 4 pm snack when I get so hangry I’ll rip your face off.
Did it make me happy? Yes. Who doesn’t love any kind of nut butter? My only caveat is that I end up ripping open the packet to get every last morsel, forcing me to act like some sort of feral scavenger.
A subscription to Master Class. I got a year for $1 through some student promotion and I thought hey, why not, I’d love to watch a slick youtube video from Margaret Atwood to revive my writing.
Did it make me happy? For a split second. It was an aspirational purchase, but I haven’t watched a single thing. Here’s a good article about it, which I spent more time reading than actually using the service.
