PhonoMorphoIdiot at ANTI-AESTHETIC
Life has been so busy I didn’t even get around to announcing on my own blog that I have new work in a group exhibition at ANTI-AESTHETIC in Eugene.
PhonoMorphoIdiot is a group exhibition that considers the uncertainties and absurdities of our verbal, written, and text-based communication. We exist between a shared understanding and the sensory and cultural edges of language which are shaped by everything from bodily states, fantasies and in-group signaling, to predictive text, targeted advertising and character limits. Whether through image-making, objects or sound, the artists in this show engage with language’s flexibility – often to its breaking point. Channels become convoluted, noise increases, the signal is misdirected or lost. By staying with these failures and frolicking in their wreckage, we may stumble upon alternative modes of signifying and connecting to one another.
Featuring work by Andrew C. Lorish, Stephanie Parnes, Alyson Provax, Madeline Maszk, and Courtney Stubbert.
PhonoMorphoIdiot will be on view at ANTI-AESTHETIC, 245 W 8th Ave, Eugene, OR, from April 16th through May 29th, 2022, with open hours on Saturdays and Sundays, 12–4pm.

I co-curated this show with Stephanie Parnes - an artist whose work I discovered on Instagram during the pandemic. We both had a adjacent approaches to using language and humor in our drawings, so I reached out to her last April and asked if she wanted to help me curate. I’m pretty proud of this show, and it epitomizes a core aspect of what ECA has always been about for me - meeting new artists, giving them a space to show new work, and actually getting to participate in the dialogue with them as an artist myself. My work in the show consists of a set of 14 small drawings (see above) and a sound installation. We also made this funny ASMR-ish video manipulating predictive text to promote the exhibition:

FREE STATIC Live June 5th at Porchfest 2022
Since 2016 or so, I’ve been collaborating with my friend Chris Ruiz on a music project heavily inspired by the fact that we didn’t want to write songs or put any pressure on ourselves to “take it to the next level.” We both share an interest in improvisation, musique concrete, the work of 70s German electronic artists, and generally favor texture and the sonic corners of field recordings and the low frequency hum of a refridgerator over western harmonics and traditional song structures.
That was the most pretentious sounding sentence ever.
But seriously, our sound is awesome and weird and you never know where it’s going to go. Our process includes a mix of modular synths, guitar pedals, drum machines, tape loops and found sounds. We’ve put out four releases since we started, including a live soundtrack performance to the film “View of the Red Forest” by our friends Julia Oldham. It’s a day trip through the forests near the Chernobyl site in Ukraine. We performed this piece live twice in 2019.
In preparing for this upcoming event I’ve been chopping up samples from a 70s new age meditation record. It’s got some pretty interesting moment - rhythmic chanting, bad tibetan monk droning attempts, gongs, guided meditation voices, as well as a lot of medicore musical performance that, we think, make for a compelling dialogue with our other performance tools. BYOB and a lawn chair and hear what happens.
