This Thanksgiving try out the Squares feature on the site.

You will be able to add a Squares Contest for any of the Thanksgiving games, from either the Dashboard or the Contest List. Your options are how much to charge for a square, and how many squares one person may acquire (default limit is 20).

This will look and feel like any squares contest. If you have club members, they can choose their own squares by going into the contest, or just buy in bulk. If you are a club organizer, you can also sell squares to people, including making new members on the fly.

The number values for the squares will be revealed once all the squares are sold and the contest moves from open to running.

I would love to have more flexible options around what to do with unsold squares in the future. For now, the squares will be distributed among the people who bought squares with a proportional distribution based on poker chip races.

If you are not familiar with the idea of a chip race, when it comes time to remove lower denomination chips from a poker tournament, you try to trade up the lower denomination chips to higher denomination chips according to real proportions. But there are often leftovers. Rather than just take those out, you add those up and exchange the total for the higher denomination chip. Based on how many chips players had, you deal out an equal number of cards, and the highest cards get the chips. No single player can get more than one.

Squares will be divvied similarly. Suppose 5 players each bought 15 squares. That leaves 25 squares, they will be divided evenly, 5 apiece.
If 5 players bought 10 and one player bought 40 squares, then for the remaining 10 - 4 will go to the player who bought 40, one each will go to the players that bought 10, and that leaves one more. That will be randomly assigned, with the player who bought 40 having the best chance to get it.
