Death to Realism! 033
Hello again! This will be a fairly brief one. If you need a refresher on the origin & nature of these updates, check out the first issue before reading on.
What's New?
It's past the end of July so the Plaintext Distro shop has gone into hibernation, and all zine orders are shipped and on their way now. I wrote up a little report about how we did despite the change of plans this year, so you can check that out and sign up to future news about Plaintext zines as well.
Coming Soon
Other than that, I've just been adjusting to a new full time, permanent role! I also have my novel out on submission at a few places and another novella bubbling on the stove, but all of these things are slow and not that flashy. Because of all this, I'm pausing subscription charges going forward, and slowing things down to once a month, or maybe when I have something more interesting to say, in the future!
The Rec Room
There's a deal going where you can get all of the Trashtronix catalogue for one low price, I like this one.
And if that's not quite the vibe you need, the First Land OST is also available now
I found this zine about the appropriation of Judaism in various magical imaginaries to be really interesting.
Finally I made this recipe for banana bread, which turned out really good, if a bit richer and more cakey than I was expecting. My mom must adjust it somehow, or I've got to experiment more...
I've Been Reading
I didn't get much time alone with new books this past fortnight, though I am looking forward to this soon-forthcoming collection of Clarice Lispector's newspaper columns. I did end up reading a lot of interesting articles, though. I liked this read on the emotional tenor of crypto grift niches, and, possibly relatedly, this analysis of "emotional intelligence" as a uniquely neoliberal self-management technique. Naturally, I love anything about doppelgangers, and these two articles, about the extent to which a creative pursuit can or should be automated, versus the drawbacks of a different creative pursuit that relies heavily on very human networks and customs, seemed to resonate with each other too.
I think that's all I have for now! For new subscribers who have signed on since the last newsletter, you can check out the archive of past issues at any time!
