Housekeeping
Hi folks! For reasons you’re either painfully, annoyingly aware of OR would be bored by, I’m looking into ways to move this newsletter off Substack. However, I’m also in the throes of book publicity right now, which makes it hard to figure out these kinds of strategic moves. It is also, frankly, really hard to make myself write for a company I’m extremely mad at while also distracted with other stuff, even though the “for” there is doing a lot of undeserved work. (I’m not writing this FOR Substack, I’m writing it for you! And yet.) So here’s what all that means: I will be writing less for the next few weeks, then making a move with one of the services that allows you to transfer your subscribers, i.e. makes it as easy as possible on all of you. I’ve paused monthly paid subscriptions; if you have an annual paid subscription and you want a refund because you paid for it on the premise of weekly emails, I will process those without complaint.
In the meantime, I’ve done two podcasts recently, and I have four book events and one work event coming up! So actually you have access to more of me than you could possibly want.
Podcasts
Longform Podcast: Here’s an hour of me talking to my brother-in-law about the book, the internet, and the tactics and ethics of personal writing.
Spirits Podcast: I had a great conversation with Julia and Amanda about Greek mythology and how Athena is Not Like Other Girls. This one has a transcript! The transcript is too faithful and I have to stop reading it now.
Events
Monday 3/15 (<extremely Demi voice> that’s today!), 6 pm ET: Demystifying Publishing, a panel discussion for Electric Literature. This one costs $10 but will hopefully be very useful for new or aspiring authors, and that $10 also gets you the video if you can’t make this time.
Tuesday 3/16, 7 pm ET: Talking about the book with Amber Sparks at Midtown Scholar. This and all the subsequent events are free, though I believe you need to RSVP for all.
Thursday 3/18, 7 pm ET: Talking to Helen Rosner at Books Are Magic. Wearing a very cute dress for this one. Though to spectators it will, like all clothes at online events, merely be a cute dickey.
Tuesday 3/23, 9 pm ET: Talking to question mark at Elliott Bay Books.
Thursday 3/25, 8 pm ET: Talking to Kate Harding at Women and Children First. Probably wearing the sweater I talked about here. That’s how you guys are choosing which of these to go to, right? Outfits?
Thanks for your forbearance, all! Very frustrated that Substack is pulling some BS but relieved it’s all coming out now, when I’m still pretty new and it’s easy to move. Please continue supporting all the wonderful writers who are more entrenched here, even if—actually, especially because—the platform doesn’t value them the way it values bigots.
