Long live the new flesh!
Friday the 13th, St. Patrick's Day, Paralympics Sunday, the Oscars! All this and birthday bumps for Joe Dante and David Cronenberg--enjoy this mini-edition of Sunday Scaries!
“Be careful what you do...because this hotel was built over one of the Seven Doors of Evil - and only I can save you!”
~ The Beyond (1981)
Joe Dante’s birthday was a few days back. We just had our second Friday the 13th in a row. It’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The Milano-Cortina Winter Paralympic Games are wrapping up in a few hours. St. John’s is digging out from yet another snowstorm. It’s Oscar night tonight. And it’s David Cronenberg’s birthday today. It must be time for some Sunday Scaries!
I’m going to keep it short(er) today as we all clearly have a lot going on. If you’re like me and are happy to wait till tomorrow to find out who wore what, who won what, and who slapped who this time, let’s find something else for you to watch tonight.

Happy Joe Dante’s birthday! Really, so many great films and shows to choose from, it’s hard to go wrong, but why not make some popcorn and throw on Pirahna (1978), Dante’s goofy, gory and good-humoured monster movie that goes some places where Jaws wouldn’t dare.
Happy Friday the 13th! Happy Paralympics! Yes, you know what’s coming. It’s a great night to break out Friday the 13th Part II, which is not only the most satisfying horror movie of the franchise (and a proper introduction to the unkillable Jason Voorhees), but also has rare disability representation from hunk-in-a-wheelchair Mark Jarvis, played by Tom McBride, who is subject to one of the most shocking deaths in the entire series.

Happy David Cronenberg’s Birthday! Happy Snowstorm! A perfect night to curl up on the couch to watch a wintry triple bill of Rabid (1977), Videodrome (1983) and The Brood (1979).
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Happy Oscars! It’s no secret I’m rooting for Sinners (2025). If you haven’t already seen it, there’s no better time to fire up Ryan Coogler’s breakout 2½ hour ‘thirties-set Black vs. Irish vampire horror-musical.

All right, time for me to go grab a shovel. I’ll be back in two weeks with another full edition of Sunday Scaries. Stay warm, stay healthy, stay alert!
