Hello! This is a short one to let you all know that my new book, “Sustainable Dev Environments with Docker and Bash” is now available. This book is the result of getting tired of broken dev environments for my personal projects. I went on a somewhat deep dive to understand Docker and put that into the book.
As a subscriber to this newsletter or someone who signed up on the book's website, you can buy the electronic version right now for
$14.99 if you use the code DEVLIST
at checkout, which will be valid until the end of May. You can buy it now or learn more about the book at devbox.computer, including seeing the full table of contents and reading a sample chapter.
The book is also available in print for $29.99 from Amazon. Unfortunately, I cannot give discount codes for that.
If you find Docker confusing—why are images stored in a container registry?— and why there's hundreds of blog posts about setting up Docker that are all different, this book will straighten all that out. But, it's for dev environments, not production deployments.

I've tried my best to incorporate Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) into the pricing of my self-published books. They way I've done that is to use the “Big Mac Index”, which creates an exchange rate for currencies against the US dollar based on the price of a Big Mac in each country. This is often different from the currency exchange rate used in banking. In theory, this adjusts prices to what feels the same in each country.
The way I've used this is in two ways:
DEVLIST
.amazon.com.au
, the price there is lower than what 29.99 USD would be in AUD.Note that in both cases, I may have used a lower per-country discount to ensure my costs are covered and I make at least something from each sale. These books are my only source of income at the moment.
If your country isn't listed, please reach out and, of course, please use the honor system and pay the price appropriate for where you live.
If you have used PPP in the sale of your own products, I'd love to hear how you set it up. I would love to see this being done more broadly.
