Long time no talk - I've been sorta busy and sorta out of it, more on that below.
First up, however, I wanted to tell you about BrutRb, a web framework for making web apps in Ruby. I've been working on it for a while and it's ready to share.
It's not like Rails or Hanami. It's not low-level, though, it's just low-ceremony and low-abstraction. If you are a Ruby programmer, check it out. I hope you like it.
Since my last post in Oct of last year, I lost my mother to Parkinson's, moved my father into assisted living, and have been trying to get myself back into some sense of normalcy. I'm still caregiving for my father, but the burden is certainly lower now with only one parent. If anyone's going through similar stuff with their family, I'm happy to share tips or just listen. For those of you outside the US…I envy your healthcare system :)
Outside of that, I've been working on some app ideas, which led to creating Brut. I'm hoping to now spend more time building things I can share.
I'll keep Sustainable Rails updated as new versions of Rails come out. I may not be using Rails that much right now, but the book has a timeless feel to it, and I want it to be as relevant as it can be for as long as I can maintain it.
I'm hoping to update Sustainable Dev Environments this fall. I've fine-tuned the Docker and Bash in that book to be even more useful and resilient. For example, I have LSP servers working in containers generally without incident.
I'd love to revive my Ruby command-line book, but I don't want to get too ambitious :)
I'm also going to be going back into Linux to try to get a solid, smooth experience that can compete with my macOS setup.
That's it for now - I hope to send more newsletters in the second half of this year, so stay tuned. I've been reluctantly using AI tools to get a feel for them and hopefully have something insightful to say in a few months.
Unless otherwise noted, my emails were written entirely by me without any assistance from a generative AI.
