Introducing Scruples

Last year I started collaborating on some projects with Colin Lewis – a wonderful designer, developer and illustrator (he illustrated the Work Notes topics).

Our collaborations revealed we shared a view of what’s valuable when creating websites. And not only was working together fun, we found we were creating better work.

On Tuesday, we put Scruples Studio out into the world.

There are so many strands to putting together a ‘good’ website, let alone one that equally respects users and business goals.

Scruples is here to help organisations produce sites that are:

  • Fast – good for search engines
  • Inclusive – good for users
  • Privacy-focused – good for trust
  • Clear – good for usability
  • Sustainable – good for the environment

Scruples breaks away from conventions that have come to dominate the web: tracking users, bloated sites and poor user experiences.

We’re excited to be starting this journey and hope you enjoy the site.

Absorbing

Interesting links from the web.

Easy Data Protection Compliance Guide

Emily Overton has put together a brilliant guide on data protection compliance for small business owners, the self-employed and freelancers. At £25, it’s incredibly reasonably priced. Well worth checking out.

Signal

Signal ‘happened upon’ a Cellebrite package and looked at the software on this nefarious device. A fascinating read and another reason to use Signal.

Metomic lives on as Confirmic

A few months ago, Metomic announced that their beautiful and easy-to-configure cookie consent module was being discontinued. To my delight, it lives on under the name Confirmic – a great day in cookie compliance!

iOS 14.5 privacy settings

Can (pron. John) Duruk, shares a simple setting change in iOS 14.5. The setting prevents apps requesting permission to track the user’s activity, meaning they can’t (unless permission has been given already). Excellent.

Unoffice Hours

I’ve moved my Unoffice Hours to Wednesday afternoons (2pm – 3.30pm GMT). That better fits my schedule and opens up the possibility for folks on the other side of the Atlantic to book a call.

No agenda or email needed ahead of time, just book a slot and turn up.

If you have related links that might be of interest, or thoughts on any of these topics, I’d love to hear from you: just hit reply.

Until next time,

Dave
