Five Links #80
1. How to use Pooh case
It’s easy to confuse Pooh case with Title Case. For example: “Hundred Acre Wood” is clearly written in Title Case. But “My spelling is Wobbly. It’s good spelling but it Wobbles” is also very clearly written in Pooh case. It might take some time to get accustomed to, but I think you can usually see the difference if you Pay Proper Attention.
2. Be wary of digital deskilling
A world in which software development is reduced to the ersatz management of energetic but messy digital agents is a world in which a once important economic sector is stripped down to fewer, more poorly paid jobs, as wrangling agents requires much less skill than producing elegant code from scratch. The consumer would fare no better, as the resulting software would be less stable and innovation would slow.
The only group that would unambiguously benefit from deskilling developers would be the technology companies themselves, which could minimize one of their biggest expenses: their employees.
3. Is it really FOSS?
This project aims to offer some transparency and clarity on whether software is free and open source. I’m not one to only look for/use FOSS, but I think it is important that developer’s marketing claims are accurate. It’s interesting to browse this repository and see some of the common issues that crop up.
4. Traffic Scotland’s gritter tracker
These names are full of dad jokes: I particularly enjoyed Spready Mercury and Thistle Do Icely.
5. The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Living on this planet for quite a few decades, I have learned that it rarely works to grab things if you don’t actually touch them
