Five Links #78

Hi folks,

This is the last newsletter of the year, resuming on 8 January – no-one wants a newsletters on 25 December or 1 January, right?

Thanks for sticking around this year – catch you on the other side :)

1. You can’t make something accessible to everyone

This is why we keep working at accessibility. To shrink those cases. To move halfway to the wall, over and over, until we cannot slide a sheet of paper between our nose and the cold vinyl siding of reality. That’s why we keep up the work. That’s why we continue to try. To make things better for yet more people, even if we can’t cover everyone.

2. The Reverse-Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI

Obviously, it's nice to be a centaur, and it's horrible to be a reverse centaur. There are lots of AI tools that are potentially very centaur-like, but my thesis is that these tools are created and funded for the express purpose of creating reverse-centaurs, which is something none of us want to be.

3. HTML is for people

…I feel strongly that anyone should be able to make a website with HTML if they want. This book will teach you how to do just that. It doesn’t require any previous experience making websites or coding. I will cover everything you need to know to get started in an approachable and friendly way.

4. Reverse Dictionary

Ever wanted to search a word by it’s definition? I have, and I wish I’d known this existed.

5. Mushroom Color Atlas

What a cool project:

The Mushroom Color Atlas is a resource and reference for everyone curious about mushrooms and the beautiful and subtle colors derived from dyeing with mushrooms. But it is also the start of a journey and a point of departure, introducing you to the kaleidoscopic fungi kingdom and our connection to it.

What am I up to?

  • After many years of wanting to, I finally wrote a year-in-review blog post
  • My next available Unoffice Hour slot is 4 February
  • The Unoffice Hours Webring got a nice little feature in the latest ShopTalk Show podcast
  • I have limited availability for new projects from January.
